In 1985 I participated in my first knife show at the Oregon Knife Collectors Association in Eugene, Oregon. Also, in 1985 I took some of my knives with Hawaiian Koa handles with me on a vacation to Hawaii. That proved to be a great market for many years with my knives selling on Kauai, Maui and the Big Island. Working from my designs or from a customer's design and specs, I take sole authorship of each step in the process—including heat treating and blade tempering.

With all that said, folders, depending on the size and type can take from 8 to 16 hours and a fixed blade knife can take as few as 6 hours and a large bowie or camp knife 10 to 15 hours. Established by Mr Joe Smalley in 2012, JSKnives has grown over recent years perfecting and innovating the specialist custom made knives you will see on offer today. In addition to being a bladesmith, I am also a full-time college student. As the business grows, additional items, such as swords, will be added to our inventory. My knives can be seen at local farmers markets in Central Florida.
The result is that every Olamic Cutlery knife is a little different (their company motto is “Never the Same”, so that checks out). Ka-Bar and BK&T work independently from Cutco for the most part, but as I understand it, any Ka-Bar or Becker knife made in America is made in the Cutco factory in Olean, New York. They also all seem to be fixed blade, which actually gives us a pretty convenient reference point.
After I graduated high school I saved up my money from my job at a convenience store, and I bought my first knife grinder. After that I start making knives full time in my moms garage. I worked full time for 5 years until I was hired at The New England School of Metalwork, where I helped run the blacksmith shop, and teach classes. Iron Working is my passion, and I intend to continue my pursuit in making the highest quality, and most beautiful work I can create.
