Shundouchi Homestay (see on Booking / Agoda) is a colorful place right on the coast near Rover Cafe . I’m convinced that the place we eventually settled on, Lanyu Guesthouse (嵐羽民宿, the same sounds and tones as Lanyu , but completely different characters), is the best place to stay on Orchid Island. The only reason I didn’t choose it immediately is because it was listed on AirBnb as full, until we called them and it turned out they had one more unlisted room. You can also see their official site here, but it looked better in real life than on the website. Getting to Kenting involves taking either the High Speed Rail to Zuoying and then the shuttle bus to Kenting. You can also take the regular train to Kaohsiung station, then a bus (2-3 hours) or shared taxi (1.5 hours) to Kenting.
There’s a long stretch of nothing before reaching Langdao Village (朗島部落, Iraralay). It’s easy to miss at first, but just before Lover’s Cave, there’s a thin cave that you can enter and climb through to find A Thread of Sky (一線天), a large crack 台東 伴手 opening up on the other side. You’ll soon notice a well paved path leading off on the right to the coast. There’s nothing else to do in town, but if you’re spending the night, there a small bar called十一鄰Bar and a few simple restaurants.

If sweet tooth’s run in the family, the pineapple cake in Taiwan is a must buy. It is a delicious buttery pastry with pineapple paste in the middle.
Taitung’s Taiwanese meatballs are very famous in the world of snacks. The steamed buns of Donghe and Beinan are renowned far and wide, the unique preparation method and the use of fine quality ingredients making the shell soft but chewy and the filling tender and juicy. If you happen to be in Taiwan in the winter, don’t miss the chance to experience the Yuan Xiao Festival, where mochis are in demand. The mochi or sticky rice is so tasty, stuffed with the sweet or tangy filling, seeping out the squishy white skin.
I have been to Kaohsiung and Keelung and enjoy and visiting, but need to explore more of this beautiful country. I recommend staying at Tiin Tinn – Rivershore B&B, it’s close to everything, clean, and the staff is friendly. The rooms are small but comfy, the decoration is great, and everything looks brand new. The best way to get from Taichung to Taitung is by train, it takes less than 4 hours and cost between $21 to $35 USD.

You could spend months savoring the slow-paced lifestyle of this beguiling region . However, its string of tiny fishing villages and thriving Amis culture are great reasons to stop and explore. "Taitung Essence" showed its most brilliant shine and became the origin for building local brand goods and led Taitung to the world.
