If you are unable to secure direct TRA tickets to Taitung, you can try to take high speed train to Kaohsiung and then take TRA train or bus to Taitung from Kaohsiung. The owner came to pick us up later and we were whisked back to our B&B, which by the way, is located at GongGuan 伴手禮 台東 Village 公館村 The B&B has a few interns that exchange work for rooming. In the beginning of every month, each intern has to share something about themselves. One girl shared about her hometown, which was located in southern Kaohsiung, while another decided to bake us dessert.

There is a light sculpture performance at 8 o’clock in the evening, and another at 9 o’clock with unique music, showcasing the cultural atmosphere of Taitung. If the time is correct, and the weather is good, you can even admire the beautiful moonlit sea. Orchid Island, also known as the home of the flying fish, and is the second-largest off-island in Taiwan. It was originally called Red-headed Island but later renamed after the famous white butterfly orchid. To Dawu, the island is “Pongso no Tao”, meaning island of the people in their language.
Take a moment to catch your breath and soak in the natural beauty of the area before descending back down the mountain. Taitung travel blogThe best time to visit Taitung is between November and April. Pleasant temperatures fall in the range of 22 – 28°C and there is very little rain. Meanwhile, the typhoon season lasts from mid-May until September-October, so this is not the right time for a trip to Eastern Taiwan. Based on Trip.com user ratings,Century Hotelis a highly rated Hot spring hotel with a gym. I’m an aspiring world traveler, who moved across the Pacific Ocean twice.
By scooter, it’s going to take you a solid 4.5-6 hours to get from Taitung to Kenting on this route, while route #1 should only take about three hours in total. (太麻里) is an insanely long stretch of beach that usually has few to no people on it. A small detour off just before the point where highways 9 and 11 meet will bring you to Zhiben Hot Spring and National Forest Recreation Area. Highway 11 end when it rejoins with Highway 9 just south of Taitung City. We spent about 6 hours scootering this route from Hualien to Guanshan in Taitung, with few stops, to give you a general idea.

7- Elevens serve as places to get water, snacks, and to withdraw money from ATM's. The strong wind in autumn and winter can make a big difference, too. It’s suggested to cycle southward from Hualien so that you don’t have to fight against the strong northeast monsoon. Check the direction of wind before you decide whether to cycle southward or northward. There are plenty of service points along the way so not to worry.
Near the entrance to lover's cave is a tunnel that goes through the mountain. I first thought it could have been an ROC air raid shelter, but acutally was an early road connecting the villages. Many passerby's think that it is "Lover's Cave," so it has been also named "Fake Lover's Cave." When the ROC first occupied Taiwan they also sent soldiers to Lanyu. The soldiers were sometimes rude and bullied the locals who could not speak Mandarin and still practiced their native culture.

Just after Highway 11 reaches the coast, you’ll reach Farglory Ocean Park, the largest of Taiwan’s theme parks that has a marine focus. Although it’s not my cup of tea, and I’d rather sea dolphins in the wild such as on this dolphin and whale watching tour, Farglory is quite popular. (鹿野高台), which is also beautiful and perfect for going for a ride.
It is just before the long Shanyuan Beach (杉原灣沙灘), which is beautiful but difficult to access unless you are staying at one of the guesthouses along the it, such as this one. Steeped in tradition and rolling out stunning landscapes, Vietnam is a deep cultural pool. Everything catches the eye, whether it’s the aromatic coffee delivered in lacquered mugs or the lazy wind of a bamboo boat. While I love taking photos of every country I visit, I will admit that sometimes – photos aren’t enough.

Winters are said to be dreary, cold, and have constant northeastern winds that can stop airplanes and ferries from departing to the island. A second option for getting from Taitung to Kenting is the slow route that mostly sticks to the east coast. You’ll pass very few settlements, and see almost no people, but the road itself is very smooth the whole way, making for gorgeous riding. Note that this route will take you into Kenting National park from the east side, while route #1 will take you in from the west side. This can make a big difference, as the national park is quite large, and it depends where you plan to stay in Kenting. Even if you don’t catch the balloon festival, Luye is an interesting area to explore anytime of year.
There are also two souvenir shops where you can buy hats, fans, umbrellas and more with Huang’s artwork. While the village is free to visit, they supposedly accept donations. I didn’t see anywhere to do this, so we made a point of buying a few things. As you take the leap of faith, enjoy stunning views of the valley below.

Visitors to Taroko Gorge can stay in the Taroko National Park, close to the entrance to the park or in nearby Hualien where the trains from Taipei arrive and depart. We recommend staying in the park for both the close to nature experience and the convenience for sightseeing. Sun Moon LakeOur other favourite stops were the Ci-En Pagoda and the colouful Wen-Wu Temple. The old streets of Shifen, located around the railway track, are where visitors congregate to release colourful lanterns bearing their wishes in life. The Yehliu Geopark contains a fascinating collection of unique geological formations in an otherworldly landscape created by sea erosion.

We welcome the world to come and experience the unique charisma of Taitung’s Balloon Festival. The beach is wild and unsupervised – it is not considered safe to swim due to powerful currents and riptides.
