The steep drop-off created the ideal place to look out into the blue while expansive beds of coral covered the reef wall. Large sea fans were hanging on the underside of overhangs and larger fish species like snapper, sweetlips and bluefin trevally were cruising around. Once again the conditions were calm making for a very enjoyable snorkel. After landing at the small village in the morning, birders made our way past the neat houses onto a logging track that quickly turned into narrow trail. It was very quiet, extremely humid, and the trail was muddy, but we pushed on into the thick secondary forest interspersed with more mature trees.
Having to stand is common, particularly tourist routes outside the city like Yangmingshan, Jiufen and Pingxi. It's worth starting out early to avoid the crowds and secure a seat, especially on weekends. I didn't have time to visit Tainan but i did visit Kaohsiung for a short time. From what i remember Tainan has more of the old stuff, lots of old heritage buildings, lots of old temples, old fort, houses etc, museums etc. some famous salt field called Jingzijiao Wapan Salt Fields on the far outskirts. Even Xinyi district which i guess means between Taipei 101 and Taipei City Hall, that area on google maps.

There are many taxis in Taitung, however a majority tend to congregate around the Old Railway Station.
As other people have mentioned, follow the crowd because there are differences when both stalls sell the same thing and one has no customers. I'm after suggestions of a good area to base ourselves in. Ideally somewhere with easy access to major attractions and night markets, but not too busy/crowded.
