Matei 'scored a game-high' 21 points to take the lead for Woori Card

The Woori Card men's professional volleyball team moved to the top of the standings with a win over KEPCO.

Woori Card won its Dodram 2023-2024 V-League home match against KEPCO 3-1 (25-21 25-23 19-25 25-20) at Jangchung Gymnasium in Seoul on Monday. With their sixth win of the season (1-1) and three more points, the Woori Card moved to the top of the standings with 17 points, overtaking Samsung Fire (5-1-1, 14 points).

Woori Card, whose winning streak was snapped in the opening round when they lost their final game of the first round against OK Financial Group on March 3, turned things around by sweeping the bottom-ranked KEPCO in the first game of the second round.

Matei "Cannon" Kok (nicknamed Matei) scored a team-high 21 points, while wing players Han Sung-jung and Kim Ji-han added 13 points each. Meanwhile, KEPCO, led by 28 points from Taith Lesser Host, suffered their fourth straight loss.

Woori Card took a tight first set thanks to even scoring from its players. Matei led the team's offense with eight points, while outside hitter Kim Ji-han added four points. Woori Card took the lead with a 'high'. At 17-16, middle blocker Park Joon-hyuk and Matei successively blocked an open attack by opposing foreign attacker Tais. With a three-point gap, Woori Card closed out the set with a quick opener from Kim Ji-han.

Woori Card had the last laugh in the closely contested second set. Kim Ji-han, who formed a "duo" with Matei, scored six points with a 75% attack success rate. Woori Card was down to one point at 24-21 after back-to-back errors, but Park Jun-hyuk's kill sealed the set. After dropping the third set with eight unforced errors, Woori Card found its offense and took the fourth set to close out 토토 the match. After being tied at two points in the third set, Matei made up for it with seven points in the fourth. "I'm disappointed that our offensive rhythm didn't match in the third set, but I'm grateful to the players who played well to win the first match of the second round," said Shin Young-cheol, head coach of Woori Card after the match.

Meanwhile, in the women's competition, Hyundai E&C defeated Jung Kwanjang 3-1 (28-26 24-26 25-21 25-16) at home, led by a 29-point performance from Leticia Moma Basoko (registered name Moma).
