The band Toto was formed in 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro and David Paich (who were also acclaimed studio musicians with Boz Scaggs at the time) and singer/bassist Bobby Kimball. Taking their name from the Latin word meaning "all inclusive," the group was determined to explore all styles of music.

In 1981 the third album by Toto Turn Back was a flop However, they resurface with their fourth album Isolation that features two hits, including the title track and Roseanna. The album and their tour helped them become a household name around the world.

After a short hiatus, Toto returns with the album Fahrenheit. The album is different from the ballads that were featured on previous albums, and features some heavy rock. This album was their first album to go platinum in North America.

During the recording process of the fifth album The group loses its manager and is faced with financial problems. They decide to record a new album and change their name a different producer. Joseph Williams, the son of John Williams, the legendary film composer and actress Barbara Ruick from 1950s, takes over Fergie Frederiksen as lead singer. Joseph is more natural as a frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a much-needed boost.

In 1999, the band release Mindfields and begins an extensive worldwide tour. After a few weeks in Europe, the band heads to Japan for sold-out shows. After a short hiatus, Toto resumes their recording and release their first live album entitled Absolutely Live in 1993. The album features a cover of Weezer’s song Hash Pipe as a response to the band's performance in Africa during their recent tour. Toto's touring group is comprised by drummer Lenny Castro, bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem von Schroeck.

In addition to the original members, keyboardist Greg Tambu filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate filled in for Shem Von Schroeck.
