Joseph Williams, the son of John Williams, the legendary film composer and actress Barbara Ruick from 1950s, takes over Fergie Frederiksen as lead singer. Joseph is more natural as a frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a much-needed boost.

In 1999, the band release Mindfields and begins an extensive worldwide tour. After a few weeks in Europe, the band heads to Japan for sold-out shows. After a short hiatus, Toto resumes their recording and release their first live album entitled Absolutely Live in 1993.
