About Toto

The band Toto was formed in 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro and David Paich (who were also acclaimed studio musicians with Boz Scaggs at the time) and singer/bassist Bobby Kimball. The name comes from the Latin word meaning "all all-encompassing," the group was determined to explore all styles of music.

In 1981 Toto's third album Turn Back is a failure However, they resurface with their fourth album Isolation that features two hits, including the title track and Roseanna. The album and tour made them a household name throughout the globe.

After a gap of few years, Toto return with the album Fahrenheit in the year 1986. It's a change from the ballads that were featured on previous albums and features some heavy rock. This was their first platinum album in North America.

During the recording process of the fifth album the group loses their manager and faces financial difficulties. They decide to change their name and make a new album using a new producer. The lead singer Fergie Frederiksen is let go and replaced by Joseph Williams, son of the legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph is more natural as a frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a needed boost.

The band releases Mindfields in 1999 and embarks on a major tour across the globe. After a few weeks in Europe the band travels to Japan for sold-out shows. After a short break, Toto resumes recording and begins recording their first live album, Absolutely Live in 1993 which includes a cover of Weezer's song Hash Pipe in response to the band performing their hit song Africa on a recent tour. Toto's touring group is comprised by drummer Lenny Castro, bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem von Schroeck.

After Isolation Toto was put on break. This gave each member of the band the chance to pursue their own solo projects. In 1996, the group was reformed to tour and record an album. It was the first time in more than a decade that all of the original members were together on stage.

The next year, Toto toured with Ringo Starr's All Starr Band. This was the last time that the original members of Toto were performing together. It was the first time all original Toto members appeared on stage together in over 31 years. In 2002, drummer Greg Phillinganes left the group and keyboardist David Paich took a leave of absence for health reasons. Drummer Shem von Schroeck stepped in however the group was not the same without Paich and Phillinganes. In 2008, Toto decided to take a break from touring after a string lineup changes and a disappointing string of releases. The group returned to the road in 2012 after the release of the album 40 Trips Around The Sun.

The album was a return to the band's top form and the tour that accompanied it featured sold-out shows in North America and Europe. Toto's reunion was helped by the addition of guitarist Steve Lukather and bassist Shem von Schroeck, both of whom had joined the group.
