The group Toto was formed in the year 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro and David Paich (who were also highly acclaimed studio musicians with Boz Scaggs at the time) and bassist/singer Bobby Kimball. In 1981 the third album by Toto Turn Back is a failure However, they resurface with their fourth album Isolation with two hits, including the title track and Roseanna. The album and tour makes them a household name throughout the globe.

After a gap of few years, Toto return with the album Fahrenheit in the year 1986. The album is a departure from the ballads on previous albums, and features some heavy rock. The album was their first to be certified platinum in North America.

When they record the band's fifth album, the band loses their manager and is financially in trouble. They decide to change their name and create a new album with an entirely new producer. Lead vocalist Fergie Frederiksen departs and is replaced by Joseph Williams, son of legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph Williams is a natural frontman and gives the band a much-needed boost.

The band releases Mindfields in 1999 and goes on a massive worldwide tour. After a few months in Europe they come to Japan where the shows are sold out. After a brief hiatus, Toto resumes their recording and release their first live album entitled Absolutely Live in 1993.
