3 Wheel Double Buggy

A great choice for parents who want to explore off-road the Fox 5 is a true all-terrain stroller. It has a suspension that is impressive and large, puncture proof wheels.


Claire, our tester, was impressed with the packaging. It was easy to open and clean. She found it to be one of the most simple and quick pieces of baby equipment to set up. She tested it on some rough terrain and was impressed with its performance.

Seats

The majority of 3 wheel double buggies are initially single pushchairs, but some can be converted to take a second seat or carrycot by converting adapters (these are more commonly found in tandem buggies). You'll also find that some models let you add a ride-on board for older children who want to walk but still need some assistance.

For a lightweight option that's great for city streets, check out the Joie Evalite Duo. It's easy to maneuver and has a large basket that is full of storage. It can be used for twins beginning at birth and accepts two car seats, or a carrycot with seat. The seats are required to be facing forwards, and there's no room for a shopping bag under and you'll need a sidepack to do that.

Mountain Buggy Duet will be the best choice when you love off-roading. It's a side-by-side with the slimmest footprint of any double buggy available on the market. It is easier to get through narrow doors, on public transport and to climb up and over kerbs. The adjustable handlebar comes with an additional handbrake for security and safety.

Another lightweight choice is the UPPAbaby Vista 2 Double that can be used for twins or a toddler and a baby. The seats can be reclining in multiple positions with UPF 50+ sunshades. The canopy can be adjusted to ensure that the sun does not touch your child's eyes. The Vista 2 can even be transformed into a triple by the addition of UPPAbaby's 'PiggyBack board for older and mobile kids.

The iCandy Orange double buggies are one of the most popular on the market. This is due to their exceptional comfort. It's an all-terrain model with a soft suspension, which can easily handle bumpy surfaces. It can accommodate a massive 30 seating configurations and includes a built-in ride-on board for older children who prefer walking as well as a 'cinema' seating mode which raises the back seat to allow for better visibility.

Alternatively, the phil&teds dot is a great single buggy that is available from day one which is then able to take 2 (or 3!) in 3 wheeled pushchair . This is especially helpful for parents with children in a car seat because the frame can be equipped with a wedgie that allows for optimal lie-flat positioning, or car seat adapters for a wider range of brands.

Suspension

The suspension of a double 3 wheel buggy will determine the ease with which you and your child/children can push it. It is essential to have a smooth ride because babies can feel every bump in the road. 3 wheeled pushchair is especially true if you are driving on rough terrain like grass or unpaved roads. Some models also have locking front wheels to help with maneuvering and getting over obstacles such as curbs.

Some models use air-filled tyres, which give you a great all-terrain adventure, but they could be prone to punctures, so make sure you have spares in the trunk. Some models have gel or foam tyres that are specifically designed to handle bumps and can be less prone to punctures however, you may find them to be a bit stiff and uncomfortable on your child's back when you decide to run.

MFM reviewer Kath put the Urban Glide 2 through its paces with her infant and three years old children, and discovered that it coped really well on difficult terrains: "it navigated effortlessly over grass and bumpy pavements cobbles, dirt tracks and cobbles easily and was able to manoeuvre around corners and climb up and down kerbs. The 16" rear wheels, when combined with the lockable swivel wheels on the front, create an extremely stable jogging experience. Folding

A three-wheel double buggy folds very neatly to store it. There are models that fold flat and stand up (as when they were in a pushchair) as well as ones that pop out to reveal more of an umbrella-style fold with an electric brake. The more wheels a buggy has, generally the easier it will be to maneuver through rough terrain. This is particularly true when the wheels are bigger than average. This will provide you with more stability and make it less likely that your children will tip or flip over.

A popular option is the iCandy Wave, which can be used from birth using an infant car seat. It then converts to a side-by-side double buggy once your child is old enough for them to sit next to each other. It's a lightweight option that is simple to push. It also comes with a bumper bar and a raincover.

Another alternative is the phil&teds sport that is a future-proof model as it's brilliant as a single buggy from day one and can be adapted to accommodate 2 (or even three!) All of this fits into its compact footprint. It has a clever 3-wheel design and an sling seat that provides superior manoeuvrability, stability and kerb pop.

This is one of the most comfortable double buggies to run with your kids. It comes with an adjustable front wheel that locks, which will help you keep your balance on rough terrain or off-road. It also comes with a large undercarriage basket, a movable handlebar and soft suspension for comfortable riding.

It's a lightweight and compact option that folds in one hand and is great for travel. It's compatible with a wide range of infant car seats, and comes with an undercarriage basket that can be pulled out that can be used to stash shopping. It's not cheap however, it does have some distinctive features, like its one-click folding and many extras, like a bumper bar or raincover.

Storage

Many are awed by the storage capacity of a triple-wheeled buggy. Some models, like the Roma Atlas, have a large basket as well as two zip pockets on the hood, where you can store your keys and phone. It's also designed to cope with a bit of rough terrain, so it's a great choice for family walks or all-terrain walks.

Other models like the UPPAbaby Vista 2 offer plenty of space and the flexibility to carry twins or a baby and a toddler (it uses their 'PiggyBack' boards to allow this to be done). It's the smallest side-by-side double on the market. It also has some amazing technology, like LED visibility lights which are located on each side of its frame to increase safety in low-light situations.

The Joie Evalite Duo, a lightweight stroller that can hold twins from birth and is world-facing with a lie-flat seat, is something different. The clever frame can be expanded to accommodate the extra seat, but it only weighs around 11kg, which makes it easy to move and lift. It can also accommodate an infant car seat or carrycot, allowing you to enjoy the best of both worlds and it future proofs your wallet since you don't need to buy a new buggy right away.
