A crib for your baby (or next-to-me crib) is a bassinet style cot that attaches to the side of your mattress. This lets you touch your baby and soothe him without having to get up from your mattress. Some models also have an incline function that can assist in relieving reflux.

Remember, you should only sleep with your baby in a bassinet, crib or bedside crib in the event that the mattress is firm and flat to reduce the chance of inhaling.

Cots are, however, are safer than bassinets due to having an adjustable height that eliminates a gap between your child's mattress and an adult bed. Cots are generally larger and can be converted to full-size or toddler beds when your baby grows. This could save you money.

When looking for a new baby bedside cot it is important to think about your budget and the dimensions of your bedroom or nursery when choosing a cot. Keep in mind that cot beds are likely to be more expensive than bassinets, but can be an excellent investment as they last for years and can be used as your child transitions from infanthood to adulthood and beyond.

The mattress must be firm, flat, and breathable for your baby to get a good sleep and reduce the risk of developing breathing problems or pressure sores. Be careful not to overstuff your crib or use pillows, duvets bumpers, baby positioners or bumpers - they could pose dangers of suffocation. A baby mattress that is breathable must be sufficient in firmness to provide support for your baby's spine.
