What is a bedside cot?

A bedside crib (also called a co-sleeper or bassinet) is a baby crib that can be attached to your adult bed, allowing your newborn to sleep comfortably next to you. It's a method of co-sleeping in a safe manner that doesn't increase the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) like bedsharing and can help you bond with your baby's new arrival.

The cots come with one side that can be lowered to allow you to reach your baby easily at night to soothe and feed them. This is particularly helpful for mums recovering from a c-section. Many are portable or foldable which means you can use them for travel and as an interim solution for babies that aren't yet ready to transition into a crib that is large enough.

When shopping for a crib to sleep in, look for a model that has a breathable mattress and a protective cover to protect your newborn from staining. You'll also want to pick up some baby-safe add-ons such as a blanket and a cuddly toy.

If you're looking for a longer-term option, some cribs have conversion kits that allow you to turn them into a cot or a toddler bed at the time of need. This is a great way to extend their life and making the transition more seamless. Some even have a removable top section that transforms into a bassinet, and some can be used on the regular or high-rise adult bed. This is a good choice for families who plan on traveling frequently or switching rooms during the night. Consider the dimensions of your room to make sure you can fit comfortably in the crib. Many cribs come with an adjustable riser that can be used to create an inclined position for infants who suffer from reflux.
