Fan Tan, or fantan, is an ancient Chinese game of betting. It has been long-known in China. It is controlled by a "Chinese round" system like many other games. It's a game of absolute chance that also shares some similarities with Roulette. The wheel spins in reverse, and it no longer turns counterclockwise.

The Fan Tan playing card deck has fourteen. A standard game board has four sevens facing up. In this game, there are two sevens facing down. The "lowball" and "highball" are the two sevens facing up. The low ball is placed in front each player in traditional fan tanning. The high ball is kept hidden from all players except one. This player must then deduce that the card is fantan and call who has the most cards the winner.

The fourteen points face up on the playing card are called the high cards. You would play fan-tan at a regular table with a regular deck. There are two types, the standard and the extra special, of Fantans. A standard fantasy consists of fourteen cards while the special includes additional cards for seven, five, four and three.

The basic set-up for a standard 52 card deck of fan-tans consists of one outer ring for each of the fourteen high cards. The player starts the game by selecting a card from the center representing the low ball. Four high cards are then placed around this low card. The players place their bets on which high card they think will win. Once a player has won all of his wagers and folded all of his cards, the game ends and all players are declared the winners.

The 14 cards that make up a Fan Tan are the four highest cards and three lowest cards. To make way for the high cards, however the player will need to remove two low cards. In this way the entire deck of cards is reshuffled making way for the new set of cards. One new card is added to the middle of the table. This is done to ensure that the original arrangement does not change.


Fan Tan is a game that can be played either in a solo game or as a team. The solitaire version requires that the player draws seven cards from any spot on the table to start the game. Then, the other players take turns taking their cards off the table. The winning condition is when five players have removed their cards from the table without anyone else taking any action.

In a team game two people are designated as bowls who are assigned a group of cards and they are required to do their best to remove cards from the other bowls. There are many suits to choose from. The player starts with all the cards in his own bowl, while the other players get a bowl each. The loser is the player who has removed five cards from the bowl first. The winner is the one who has removed five cards from the other bowl. This game ends when a player reaches five cards remaining in his personal bowl and the last card in the other bowl is turned over to the other team who then removes the last card from it and declares the winner.
