Goethe-Zertifikat A1 (Start German 1) Exam Schedule

The official list below only shows time periods that are reserved and not confirmed exams. Check with your instructor whether or not the course will have its final exam during this period.

Before you register, make sure to read the Goethe exam guidelines and terms and conditions on each exam page. Be sure to register with the correct exam level.

Locations

The Exam Schedule lists the locations where DEP conducts operator qualification exams. Please consult individual exam pages for additional guidelines, terms and conditions and exam information. If you need special accommodations because of chronic disease, visual or hearing impairment or other disabilities, contact the exam provider and provide detailed information when you register.

The Faculty Dashboard in Workday offers a "View My Teaching Schedule", which allows faculty to locate their exam schedules. The Registrar's Office also has a schedule of exam times for the classes that must have an exam by NYSED regulations. For evening classes, final exams are scheduled at the normal class time during the final week of exams.

Registration

Students are advised to check the exam schedule online. It is important to remember that the schedule for exams may be altered at any time. Students should therefore consult their instructors for the exact time and date of their exam. Students should also print the official list to bring with them to their exam.

In addition to the exam schedule, students should also familiarize themselves with the exam guidelines and terms and conditions. They are available on the individual exam page. Students acknowledge having read and agree to the terms and conditions of registration.

Exam locations will do their best to accommodate participants who have special needs. The nature and severity of these needs should be noted on the registration form, and then confirmed by an attestation from a doctor. The locations of the exam must adhere to confidentiality.

If students are scheduled to take three exams on the same day, they must contact their department or instructor to schedule a make-up test. Although it is possible to take three tests in one day, this can result in high stress levels and can impact the quality of the exam. The professor may not be able give an additional test to make up for the missed day.


Before taking the exam, students must prepare by reviewing their course material and practicing their German skills. The exam is a paper-based test which assesses the ability to read, speak and write in German. The results of the test are reported using a scale from A1 to C2. Students who succeed in passing the test are awarded a Goethe-Zertifikat. The certificate certifies the attainment of the language level A1. This level corresponds with the first level of the six-level scale of competence laid out in the Common European Framework of Reference for Foreign Languages. The test is free of charge. Students must bring a valid government issued ID to the test. Those without a valid photo identification will be disqualified.

If you have completed your studies at Elan Academy and wish to be awarded an Goethe-Zertifikat A1 (start German 1), you'll need to pay the examination fee. This is in addition to the course fee.

Practice tests give you an overview of the style of the questions, their wording and the level of questions on the test. They allow you to assess your knowledge level, find areas of knowledge that aren't covered and increase your chances of passing the exam.
