Korean scientists aren't taking any chances when it comes to the debate over evolution. The Society for Textbook Revise has been fighting to remove the Archaeopteryx as well as horses and other evolutionist icons from textbooks.

Confucian traditions that emphasize global success and the value of learning, still dominate the culture of the country. However, Korea is searching for the new model of development.

Around 8,000 BCE, the Koreans began to establish permanent settlements and began cultivating cereal crops. They also created polished stone tools, pottery and began organising themselves in clan societies. The Neolithic Age lasted until the 12th century BC. Moreover, employers are required to sign up to accident insurance, which covers the costs for work-related illnesses or injury. Likewise, it is common for companies to provide private medical insurance that offers protection for illnesses that are not covered by National Health Insurance.

South Korea is viewed as a success model for many developing countries around the world. However the global financial crisis that swept through Asia in 1997 challenged this perception. The crisis challenged the myths about Asia's miracle economies, and led to an entirely new understanding of the role of governments in regulating risky private ventures.

In the wake of this change it appears that Korea's future is still uncertain. A new generation of leaders have embraced the image of an "strong leader" and have begun to explore market-oriented policies. On the other hand, a powerful domestic power base has made it difficult to implement radical change.

Advantages

The revival and influence of the creationists is a major hurdle for Korean science in its efforts to educate the public on evolution. The majority of Koreans are in favor of teaching evolution to students however, a small section led by Bun-Sam Lim (the director of the Society for Textbook Revise, STR) is advocating for the removal of evolution from textbooks. STR claims that teaching evolution encourages "atheist materialism" and paints an "unhopeful" perspective for students, which could cause students to lose faith in humanity.

The causes of this anti-evolution stance are complex and diverse. Some researchers suggest that it is due to religious belief, while others point to an increasing prevalence of anti-intellectualism, which has been exacerbated by growing political elite fragmentation along ideologies, regions, class, and gender. Additionally, the one-sided populism of the government, supported by powerful conservative think tanks and business interests and business interests, has led to a growing distrust of the scientific community.
