Evolution Korea

South Korea's democratic system is vulnerable to populist tendencies. Nonetheless, it is healthier than one would expect.

The country is searching for a new development paradigm. A Confucian culture that stresses respect for ancestors as well as gendered family relations continues influence society. But there are signs that a secular culture is beginning to emerge.

Origins

In the early days the ancestors of modern Koreans were capable of survival through hunting and gathering wild food. Around 10,000 years ago, they began to cultivate millet and beans as well as other crops. They also raised livestock and made furs. They established tribal states in Manchuria and later on the Korean peninsula. They also developed an industry of metalworking, making bronze tools and later iron tools. They traded with other states and introduced Celadon, paper making, block printing, art styles and writing to Japan.

In 2333 BCE Gojoseon was founded in the southern part of the peninsula. This state embraced Chinese culture, including Confucian Philosophy and Buddhism. In this period, the people of Buyeo became part of Gojoseon. Gojoseon was a hierarchical society that included a monarch as well as high-ranking officials were drawn from the landed aristocracy whereas the rest of the population was peasants. The state took taxes from these citizens, and sometimes required them to join the army or build fortifications.

Onjo the prince of Goguryeo who was also the son of Jumong the founder of Goguryeo, founded the state of Baekje towards the end of the period. The new kingdom grew its territory to the southwest of the peninsula, and was at war with Goguryeo and China's commanderies in the region. Baekje included elements of Confucian beliefs into its official belief system and made the male-centric filiopiety idea as a law in 1390 CE. Under the guise filiopiety, fathers were accountable to their families. They must be obeyed by all and respected even by their grandchildren and children.

Goryeo, which would rule from 918 to 1392 CE introduced the world to the Hangul alphabet that was based on the shapes formed by the mouth when it was pronounced. This dramatically improved communication between people, and resulted in an explosion of the writing of Buddhist texts. Woodblock printing and movable metal type were also refined. In 1145 CE, the Samguk Sagi, or "History of the Three Kingdoms" was the first to be recorded.

The evolution of Korea

The Korean peninsula was habitable from Neolithic times to. Early evidence of human settlements can be seen in the form of cist graves lined with stones, and adorned with precious items such as amazonite jewelry that were buried with the dead. Megalithic structures known as dolmens, constructed from massive single stones, are also common throughout the country.

In the first second half of the 1st millennium BCE, Gojoseon established itself as the first recognizable political state. After that, the peninsula was ruled by a variety of states during the Three Kingdoms period (57 BCfrom 635 CE) including Baekje, Goguryeo, and Silla. The northern region of the peninsula was occupied for a period by the Balhae Kingdom that historians do believe to be a real Korean state.

Following the Three Kingdoms, several smaller states emerged during the Proto-Three Kingdoms period, or Several States Period (yeolgugsidae). Baekje is the most powerful of these states was weakened by the fall of Goguryeo (676 CE) leaving only its southern regions in Manchuria and the the western region around Hwanghae Bay. Eastern Buyeo as well as the Gaya confederacy, thrived for a time.

The Unified Silla kingdom then emerged and the three kingdoms began to work together in order to expand their territories. In the end, Silla, with significant Chinese assistance, defeated all other states and unified the peninsula in 935 CE.

As Korea enters a post-crisis phase, its development paradigm seems to be changing. People who are shocked by the enormous cost of the old system are urging the need for a comprehensive program of liberalization of capital as well as labor markets. On the other hand those who support the old system are seeking to keep it in place by leveraging nationalist sentiments and generating fear over potential job losses.


The academic and policy analysts remain in a tense debate about the extent to these two developments are driving Koreas shift towards an entirely new model of economic governance. This article focuses on the five phases of the Korean evolution in terms of its political development that include democratic democracies that are not liberal (1945-60), democratic autoritarianism (1961-72) authoritarian exceptionalism (1972-1877), democratic paternalism (2001-2002) and participatory democracy (2002). This article also highlights significant factors that may be shaping these processes.

Creationism in Korea

In South Korea, 26 percent of the population is Christian. Creationists have made strides in promoting their beliefs to this segment. A survey from 2009 showed that nearly one-third of respondents didn't believe in evolution. Of those who voted, 41% stated there was not enough scientific evidence to support the theory 39% claimed that it did not align with their religious beliefs; and 17 percent said they did not understand it. The level of doubt is similar to the United States where a similar number do not believe that humans evolved from earlier types of life.

In the past, the anti-evolution movement in Korea focused primarily on educating students and the introduction of Christ to them. An increase in the interest in creation science occurred in the year 1980, following a four-day seminar held during the World Evangelization Crusade in Seoul that featured Drs. Henry Morris and Duane Gish of ICR as the featured speakers. This event attracted a large number of pastors, professors, church leaders, and scientists.

The success of this event led to the founding of the Korea Association of Creation Research (KACR) on January 31st, 1981. The inauguration meeting was widely reported in the national press, including The Korea Times and Chosun Ilbo and also was well-received by the public.

KACR began publishing a monthly newsletter, CREATION, in which it published its activities and published articles on scientific evidence for creationism. It also translated a number of slides and film strips from ICR, as well as some books on the subject that were already in print outside of Korea. KACR members delivered lectures in universities and churches across the country.

One instance of one KACR success story took place at the KAIST university in Seoul. There, 에볼루션 바카라 체험 were fascinated by the concept of creationism that they raised the money and support to put up an on-campus museum with creationist fossil models and other exhibits.

In addition to its work, KACR has published a bimonthly magazine, CREATION. This magazine covers topics in the creation science. It also sponsored a series of lectures by ICR staff. 에볼루션 게이밍 has local branches that conduct seminars and present talks to school children and community groups.

The evolution of South Korea

In the latter part of the nineteenth century and the early 20th century, Korea began to adopt a more Westernized lifestyle. The traditional Korean dress, the hanbok, was replaced by miniskirts and other foreign fashion elements. The traditional Korean music was also replaced by rock and roll and jazz. During this period the samulnori, or masked dancing-dramas were very popular. These dramatic pieces were performed to the accompaniment of shaman drummers and other musical instruments.

The economic crisis has shaped Korea's new model of development. The biggest challenge facing the new regime is to strike a balance between market-oriented and state-led policies. It also involves changing incentives, monitoring, or disciplining schemes which have shaped the system prior to the crisis. These issues are addressed in Chapters 3 and 4.

Baekje was founded by Onjo Prince and third son of Jumong of Goguryeo, was founded by people from the Hangang River area, Buyeo and other regions and also by a migrant from northern China. In the early 4th century, Baekje was a major regional power and expanded its territory to Mahan in the north and Jeollanam-do in the south. It was therefore in constant conflict with Goguryeo and the Chinese commanderies on the border.

Gungye was a nobleman from Later Baekje who established a kingdom in Songak with Songak as the capital. He ruled a portion of today's Jeolla province and Chungcheong. Later, he moved the capital to Wansanju and became a rival to Goguryeo.

However his rule was not long-lasting. After Gungye was defeated by an influential local leader, Wang Geon, who united Goryeo with Baekje and Silla in 935. Later Baekje was peacefully integrated into Goryeo as an heir state. Wang Geon also introduced fundamental reforms, and strengthened the centralized ruling system. This marked the end of the Three Kingdoms Period. From then on, the Korean peninsula was controlled by the Goryeo Dynasty. In the Three Kingdoms Period, Goguryeo Baekje Silla slowly developed into powerful states on the peninsula as well as in Manchuria.
