Dual Fuel Range Cooker With 13amp Plug
Are you a home cook who appreciates the flexibility of gas cooktops but needs an oven to bake in? Discover a dual fuel range cooker that has the best of both worlds.
Many home chefs with experience prefer gas cooktops due to their superior temperature control and capacity to utilize advanced cooking techniques such as charring. These powerful stoves are costly, especially if they require an extra gas connection and an electrician for installation.
What is a 13amp plug?
If you own dual fuel range cooker (also known as an electric and gas oven) then you'll require a suitably rated 13 amp plug. The plug will also have to be hard-wired into the cooker circuit ring by a qualified electrician.
This assures that the current that flows through the plug is safe and not too high, which could result in an electrical fire danger. The current is controlled by a fuse inside the plug. The fuse will blow as soon as it is deemed to be overloaded. This protects the appliance from an overload of electricity.
The fuse is classified at 13 amps, as shown on the top of the plug. this indicates the maximum current that the plug can carry without causing harm to the appliance or overheating the socket. When replacing fuses, it's important to use the same amperage rating that was used in the original. There is a risk of overheating a socket when you replace a fuse that has a different rating.
A 13 amp fuse will be a ceramic type, which is very durable and is able to withstand high temperatures produced by the range cooker. Ceramic elements are also fire-resistant and therefore a better choice than other types.
There are a few different ways in which 13 amp plugs can be connected. It may be wired to an existing live socket. the flex then connected to it by an screw or a plastic jaw type cord clamp. The clamp must be tightened after the plug is tightly pushed into place.
Before connecting the wires, you may need to remove the wiring diagram printed on cardboard that is placed on top of the pins on some plugs. The wires must be trimmed to the right length, as when they are too long, they can get crushed when the plug covers are replaced. The earth wire should be the longest in order to connect it prior to the neutral and line pins.
How do I install a 13amp plug?
The vast majority dual fuel range cookers sold in UK are equipped with a 13 amp plug. This is crucial since ovens draw significant current, and standard plug sockets only have a 10-amp rating.
In general, new appliances should be equipped with a plug at the point of sale. This is part of ensuring compliance with the Plugs and Sockets etc (Safety) Regulations 1994. However, older appliances might not be connected to an outlet and that is where the issue arises.
The first thing to consider when connecting a cooker with an existing plug socket is to ensure that the fuse rating in the fuse box is in line with that of the plug. This is crucial because an incorrectly-sized fuse can be dangerous.
It is also advisable to ensure that the fuse is fully set in the cartridge and there isn't any movement within it. Next up is to prepare the flex that is to be used. Remove the sheathing from the flex in order to expose the three insulated conductors within. Next nick the sheathing at the entry point to the plug (beyond the cord grip) using a utility knife without penetrating the individual insulated conductors. This nick should be wide enough that the sheathing can split and then expand when it is pulled back, revealing the cable underneath. Cut off the excess sheathing, leaving about 40mm beyond the flex.
The flex is placed over the plug, with the earth terminal on top and the live and neutral terminals on the bottom. The sheathing of each pin is removed using the colored conductors as a reference. The internal cable is then fixed to the terminal using the cord grip. If the plug has an screw-type clamp for cords loosen it and pull back the insulation to expose the copper conductors. Then, connect each of the conductors insulated to the proper terminal (starting with the earth first, then neutral and finally the live) by using the channel that they run through the plug.
What is the maximum draw of a 13 amp plug?
The maximum power draw of a 13amp plug is 3kw at 230volts. This is quite a bit of power, but the standard fuse that is fitted in a UK plugtop will not fail until the cable is heated to a dangerous temperature. It is essential to be aware of the power you are using in your kitchen, since an unfit plug or socket can lead to an accident.
The fuse inside the plugtops are made of ceramic, about 25mm long and rated for 240V mains. They'll be marked with an BS kitemark or similar mark on the side, and they contain sand. Plastic or glass alternatives are available, but should never be used in conjunction with a live plug.
In the UK the majority of dual fuel range cookers are hardwired. They are not able to plug directly into an outlet on the wall. They are usually connected to a separate cooker ring circuit, which is only suitable for appliances that consume up to 20 amps.
Examine the ring circuit in your home by using the fuse box, or ask an electrician in your area. They will be able tell you if the sockets within your home are on the same ring or separate and if there is a separate circuit for your oven.

What is the maximum draw of a switch for a cooker?
There is plenty of confusion over what the maximum current draw of a cooker switch is. The reality is that the majority of cookers aren't designed to plug into an ordinary socket, but rather are wired hard and fed into a dedicated oven ring circuit. This is because they will often consume far more than 20 amps of power when the electric oven and gas hob are being used.

You will not find dual fuel range cookers that can be fitted in standard sockets, because this could create a significant fire risk and infringe electrical regulations. A licensed electrician should install new electrics in the kitchen, connecting them to a cooker. They will also ensure that the total load of the oven and the hob does not exceed the circuit's power supply capacity.
The advantages of a dual fuel cooker include the responsive heat of a gas cooktop along with the precision of an electric oven. This is the reason they are well-liked by chefs and cooks at home alike. If you are looking to experiment with different cooking techniques, such as searing and charcoaling, a dual fuel range cooker is the perfect choice.
