How to Buy a Real Registered Driver's License

Over the years the law enforcement community has tried a variety methods to combat fake IDs. Holograms, water marks, bar-coding and dual photos have been employed, but they all can be defeated by sophisticated counterfeiters.

You'll need two documents proving New York State residency to get a REAL or Enhanced ID. Examples include your current driver's license or non-driver ID, utility bill or bank statement, or a pay stub.

Real Documents Unit

The Real Documents Unit processes applications and renews existing licenses for individuals who are unable to obtain an ID card for a driver or non-driver card due to medical issues. This process involves reviewing the medical records of an individual and determining if they're competent to drive in a vehicle. If not, the license for that person could be cancelled.

Real Driver's Licenses

The Real Driver's Licenses are a new form of identification that is compatible with the federal Real ID Act. The law sets minimum security standards for state issued permits and drivers' licenses as well as ID cards. Federal agencies like the Transportation Security Administration are prohibited from accepting any ID card that does not meet those standards. In October 2017, the DMV began the process of releasing Real IDs, which look different from standard driver's licenses and include a picture of a star on them. You can also purchase a passport from their nearest post office for less than what they would pay for a real ID at the DMV.

If you do decide to apply for an Real or enhanced ID, you will need to go to a DMV office to apply. This is due to the fact that you cannot get them online, by telephone, or via mail. You must bring these documents to your local DMV. They are evidence of identity such as a passport, driver's licence or birth certificate proof of Social Security Number or ineligibility for Social Security Number; proof date of birth; two different proofs New York state residence.
