What is a bedside cot?

A bedside crib, also known as a bassinet or co-sleeper is a baby cot that is attached to an adult bed. This allows your child to sleep next to you in safety. It is a safe method of co-sleeping, which doesn't increase the risk of SIDS like bedsharing. It can also help you bond with the newborn baby.

These cots often come with a side that can be raised, so you can easily reach your baby at night to feed and comforting. This is especially useful for mothers recovering from a c-section. Some are also foldable or portable, so you can bring them along on trips and use them as a temporary sleeping solution for newborns who aren't ready to transition to a full-sized cot.

Look for a crib with a breathable mattress, and an extra-safe cover that will keep your baby safe from staining. You may also want to purchase baby-safe items such as the blanket or teether.

If you're looking for a more long-term alternative, some cribs are equipped with conversion kits that let you transform them into a cot, or a toddler bed when the time comes. This is a great option for extending their life and making the transition easier. Some have a removable top section that converts into a bassinet, while others can be used on a regular or a high-rise adult bed. This is an excellent choice for families who plan to travel frequently or switch between bedrooms in the evening. Take into consideration the size of your bedroom to ensure you fit comfortably in the crib. Many cribs have an incline that can be used to create an incline for babies who have reflux.

Anna found that the CoZee was a safe and comfy place to sleep for her baby. She loved that it didn't rock like some other models, so it didn't wake her in the night when she was trying to soothe her baby during feedings. She also enjoyed the fact that the side could be lowered so she didn't have to reach over her partner to lift the baby for night time feeds.

The CoZee is available in charcoal and oak and is a beautiful addition to the bedroom. It's more modern than other cribs we've seen that are usually utilitarian. It's also lightweight at just 11kg and comes with a carrying case that allows you to take it with you on vacation or when you are moving home. The only things you'll need to buy are a fitted waterproof sheet and a safety strap for co-sleeping. The instructions and pictures are easy to follow when you first open the box.

The Maxi-Cosi lora

The Iora is an infant bassinet designed to help parents feel connected with their infant while they sleep. It can be adjusted upwards and downwards and shifted through three different positions for sliding to fit under the bed of the parent or in the corner so that the baby is always in reach. The mesh siding is breathable, allowing air to flow through and allows you to glance at your child. You can also put away extra pajamas or supplies in the large basket beneath.

The Iora is a bedside crib that is smaller and can fold flat. It also comes with a travel bag so it can be carried anywhere. Our mum testers found it easy to move from room to room and felt that it was a suitable size for a bedside cot, not too big or small. They also appreciated the large storage basket, that is ideal for storing nappies or bedding.

This is an excellent choice for parents who want to co-sleep but don't wish to share their beds or whose partners may be suffering from mobility issues, such as arthritis or back issues. Our mom testers loved the ease with which they could access their child in the Iora and that it came with an adjustable reflux incline that helped reduce gas.

Our mothers love that it follows NICE guidelines. They recommend placing an infant in the Moses basket or crib on its own without blankets, toys or pillows. The mattress is also a good firm and comfortable for babies, and sheets are easily available. It's not as light as the other cribs for bedside use, though it is a good choice if you are looking for something lighter and more portable, think about one of the alternatives on our list.
