How to Repair a Dead Car Key

Sometimes extreme cold or heat can cause a car key to not function properly. It is best to wait a few minutes before replacing it.


It's a real pain when the keys to your car break and it happens at the most uncomfortable times! There are a few ways to fix the broken car key that don't require the purchase of a new key.

Dead Key Fob Battery

Modern key fobs let us open doors, trunks, and tailgates without the need for a car key. Certain key fobs come with an integrated key that can be utilized to start our vehicles. However, these key fobs are dependent on a small battery that powers their remote functions. If the battery is dead then the key fob cannot send a signal to activate the vehicle. There are many ways to fix a dead car key fob.

First, determine whether the key fob actually dead. If it appears to be, then you'll have to replace the battery. You can do this yourself by taking the key fob off its clip or using a small flat head screwdriver to remove it. Be cautious not to apply too much pressure or you could end up damaging the fob. It's also important to be sure you are replacing the correct type of battery. Most key fobs use the CR2032 3-Volt battery, however certain models may require a different type of battery. You can find out what kind of battery your car requires in the owner's manual, or go to an Interstate All Battery Center and ask a specialist to assist you.

You may be able to revive the key fob which isn't dead by moving closer to the vehicle. The majority of key fobs utilize RFID (radio frequency identification) which operates within a narrow distance. The ignition system has to be able to detect the signal. You can unlock your car or even start it by moving a few inches closer.

Many automobile manufacturers have a backup system that can be activated if the key fob's battery is low. For instance, the majority of Ford models have a separate slot for the key fob that will activate the engine when properly inserted. Check your owner's manual for details on how to locate the slot and how to properly insert the key fob. Broken Key Ring

The internal chip inside the key fob communicates to the immobilizer on your car to enable the motor. If this chip becomes damaged or there are programming errors, the key isn't able to transmit the correct identification code, and your car will not start. In some cases the problem with a defective transponder key may also be caused by physical damage or wear and tear to the key shell or contact pads.

Often when the key fob begins to fail to communicate with the immobilizer system of your vehicle there will be specific warning indicators on the dashboard. These could include errors messages, a flashing light or the key not locking or unlocking the vehicle. If you notice any of these warnings, call your local locksmith immediately to repair your key fob or replacement.

If you have a lot of keys, it is easy to break the key ring. This could cause the fob to split in half. This is among the main reasons for a broken car keys. If this happens, try to use super glue to fix it by applying a small amount of the glue to both sides of the crack and carefully pressing them together. It is important to use a gel-type glue that is slow drying to avoid drips or runniness.

If this method doesn't work, you need to contact a professional locksmith as soon as possible to avoid any further damage to your vehicle. A locksmith who is qualified can repair or replace your fob in a short time and ensure that the ignition as well as door locks are not damaged during the process.

Broken Key Loop

One of my MK5 keysfobs broke off the little key ring at the top, which is where it attaches the keyfob. It's made of plastic or soft metal. I've done a hole in the wall and then wet-sanded it to make it more durable. However, I'm sure that's not helping.

I've also tried wrapping the broken part of the ring with clear tape, but it didn't work to be any better. It's a shame because I use the little split rings to keep my keys in place.

If the case for the key fob itself is broken, it's often possible to open up the case and replace the battery (assuming the battery isn't dead). There are online kits available however they are only an interim solution. It may be quicker to get it fixed by a professional. You can also locate the new case at the locksmith or home improvement stores. They're unlikely to be as costly as an entirely new key fob.
