How to Repair a Dead Car Key

Sometimes extreme heat or cold can cause the car key to not function properly. You should wait a while before you decide to replace it.

If your car keys get damaged it can be a major problem. It always occurs at the most inconvenient time! There are a few ways to fix the broken car key that won't require an entirely new one.

Dead Key Fob Battery

Modern key fobs allow us to open doors, trunks, and tailgates easily without the need to search for a physical car key. Some key fobs even have a built-in key that can be used to start cars. These key fobs are powered by a small battery. If the battery is dead and the key fob stops working, it cannot emit a signal that could activate the vehicle. There are a variety of ways to repair a dead car key fob.

First, you must determine whether the key fob actually dead. If it seems to be dead, you will require replacing the batteries. You can do this yourself by disconnecting the fob from its clip or using a screwdriver with a flat head. Be cautious not to apply too much pressure or you may damage the fob. It's also important to make sure you are replacing the correct battery type. Certain models might require a different type of battery. Find out the type of battery your car requires in the owner's manual, or you can visit an Interstate All Battery Center and ask a specialist to assist you.

If the key fob isn't actually dead, you may be able to revive it by bringing it closer to your vehicle. Since the majority of key fobs use RFID (radio-frequency identification) they only function for a short time and must be within a certain distance for the ignition system to be able to recognize the signal. If you can move a few inches closer to your vehicle, it could unlock or even start.

Many automobile manufacturers have a backup system that can be activated if the key fob's battery is low. Ford, for example has a slot that is dedicated to the key fob. If properly inserted, the key fob will activate the engine of the car. Refer to the owner's manual for information on where to find this slot and how to insert the key fob. If you're unable to start your car by using this method, call roadside assistance.

Broken Key Ring

The chip inside the key fob is the one that communicates with your car's immobilizer system to start the engine. This chip can be damaged or there may be programming mistakes. If this happens the key fob won't be able transmit the correct identification code, and your car won't begin. A faulty transponder can be caused by physical damage to the key shell or wear and tear on the contact pads.

There are often warning indicators on your dashboard when the key fob is having trouble communicating with the immobilizer system of your vehicle. These include error messages flashing lights, or the key not locking the vehicle. If you are noticing these warnings contact your local locksmith immediately to request a replacement key fob or repair.

If you carry a lot of keys, it's easy to damage your key ring. This can cause the key fob to snap in half this is one of the most frequent causes of car keys breaking. If this happens, you can try to use super glue to repair it by applying a small amount of the glue on both sides of the break and pressing them in a controlled manner. Use a gel-type of glue that dries slowly in order to avoid drips or runniness.

If this method does not work and you are not sure, contact a professional locksmith right away to prevent further damage to your vehicle. A locksmith who is certified can replace or repair your key fob quickly and will be able ensure that the ignition lock and door lock aren't affected during the process.

It can be a bit frustrating when your key fob is damaged. However, it's not cause to panic or be annoyed. Instead, you can take proactive measures to decrease the risk of your key fob breaking in the future. This includes regular maintenance by using key protectors and keeping an extra key. If you do experience an issue with your key fob, the team at Quicksmith is available to assist!

Broken Key Loop

One of my MK5 keysfobs snapped off the tiny key ring at the top, which is where it joins the keyfob. It's made of plastic or soft metal. I've made a hole, then wet-sanded the area to make it stronger. But I'm guessing that's not helping.

I've also tried wrapping the broken portion of the ring in clear tape, but it does not seem to do any good. It's a shame because I use the tiny split ring to keep my keys in the right place.

If the key fob's case is damaged It's usually possible to remove the case and replace the battery (assuming the battery isn't dead). There are car key repairs however they are only an interim solution. It is more efficient to get it fixed by a mechanic. Alternately, you may find a replacement case at an home improvement store or locksmith. They're not likely to cost as much as a new key fob.
