The Band Toto Asia

Toto was expanding production facilities abroad, and doing business in France and Germany, Indonesia, Korea and Taiwan, Thailand and the People's Republic of China. North America was seen as an opportunity to grow for toilets and bidet seats, in contrast to its "base" markets in Japan and China.

Dhaniram Toto was recording Toto words to ensure that the next generation would be able to read them. Many words were replaced by foreign words. For instance dui, which was Bengali for verandah, was being used.

Origins

The early history of Toto which began in 1917, mirrored Japan's rapid economic expansion. In the beginning of its existence, the company manufactured products to meet the demand for modern and contemporary urban housing. It had the first tunnel kiln in the nation to produce ceramics continuously. It also pioneered the use automation to control production, allowing for more efficiency and consistency.

In the latter half of the 1980s, the company began to expand overseas in order to profit from sales and new markets. It created the Cera Trading Company, importing and marketing other products from other manufacturers to complement its own line of plumbing fittings and sanitary earthenware. This strategy increased sales and increased the company's market share.

In the 1990s Toto began focusing on research and development for water-related appliances. It also improved its distribution system to better serve the needs of customers and increase profits. The company embraced a just-in time method of managing supply chains, and it used the same method in its sales program. This resulted in a higher level customer satisfaction.

Toto continued to develop toilet technology. Its most recent toilet, for instance, has an extremely powerful tornado flush that is more eco green than traditional toilets. Toto uses recycled water in its manufacturing process and has a green buying policy. Apart from toilets, Toto produces bathtubs and faucets and hand dryers that are more efficient in terms of energy consumption than typical models.

The company's first museum opened in 2015 and features exhibits about Toto's iconic products and their evolution and its group companies (all related to ceramics), history of plumbing and products like bath units and, in a separate gallery, Toto products sold around the world. The museum also has bathrooms with a washbasin and other toilet innovations.

Before forming Toto members of the group performed sessions for a variety of musicians. Keyboardist David Paich, drummer Jeff Porcaro, and guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather all played on the album Silk Degrees by Boz Scaggs. They also appeared on records by Steely Don, Seals and Crofts and Sonny and Cher.

Discography

With a name like Asia, you would think that the group would be prog queens and kings - but it's actually a pretty straight forward rock band. The group started out as a quartet and recorded two albums: 1979's self-titled debut and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. However, even though the group have a wide range of musical backgrounds, their biggest success was achieved in 1982 with Toto IV.

The album was a huge blockbuster, but it was not without its share of problems. Record companies put the band on the position with the order "give us a hit record or we'll drop you" and the pressure was on to deliver. Luckily for Toto, they did, with the help of the smash hit single "Africa."

Toto's musical mastery is a result of their previous experience since the members had been session musicians for artists like Boz Scaggs, Steely Dan, and Seals and Crofts prior the group. Their distinctive sound has become the norm for '80s pop, and has influenced many modern artists.

The album begins hard with tracks like Running Out of Time or Unknown Soldier that show the band's ability to write fantastic AOR tunes that slowly get into your head. The album also has some slower, more jazzy tracks like The Little Things and Chinatown. The album closes with Great Expectations. This song is a mix of folk and the distorted AOR, which should seem like a complete blunder, but works very well.

After Toto IV, the band's fortunes began to decline. David Hungate left the band to focus on his solo career and the band had several drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball was fired from the group in the after he was charged with drug abuse. the group continued to perform as a trio, which included Michael Porcaro and Steve Lukather.

Despite the turmoil, Toto forged ahead and released Isolation, which was not as successful as IV. However, the band still managed to release another chart-topping album in 1992 with Kingdom of Desire. This album marked the conclusion of the original Toto lineup and was the first album to feature a new singer, Simon Phillips.

The new tour of the band includes their most popular songs and rarely performed live deep cuts, along with a selection of songs from Lukather and Williams the catalogs of their respective albums.

Line-up

The band's third album, Turn Back, marked an reversion to the classic sextet format of previous albums. It was a more powerful, constant effort with an edge that was more pronounced than Hydra. The more experimental sound of Turn Back reflected the development of the group. The drummer Bobby Kimball's increasing virtuosity was reflected by the vocal delivery of Joseph Williams, who had become more confident and mature. David Paich's keyboard work was also more sophisticated, sharper and less akin to previous efforts.

After touring to promote the album, the group recorded a live show in Amsterdam which was released as a two-CD set entitled Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. A new studio album followed just a few months later and the band embarked on a world-wide tour to promote the album. During this period, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.

In 1998, Paich & Lukather began searching through old tapes & demos to discover songs that hadn't been recorded prior to. The album was released in 2001 as a duo album called Then and Now. It was the band's first album that did not contain one single track titled "A". The album also contained an previously unreleased track "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial flop and singer Williams suffered from a bad laryngitis infection that limited his singing abilities. In relevant web site , Hungate returned to Nashville as a drummer, and Leland Sklar was replaced by Shem von Schroeck.

Downes, Wetton Palmer and Howe, the original members of Asia, met in England in the early part of 2006 to discuss the possibility that the group could be revived. This lineup, minus Howe (who was working with Yes at the time) was eventually referred to as Toto XIV and toured extensively.

In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The band also featured an appearance by singer Michael McDonald, and a backing singer named Mabvuto Carpenter.
