Joseph Williams, the son of John Williams, the legendary film composer and actress Barbara Ruick from 1950s, takes over Fergie Frederiksen as the lead vocalist. Joseph is a more natural frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a needed boost.

In 1999, the band release Mindfields and begin an extensive tour across the globe. After several weeks in Europe, the band heads to Japan for sold-out shows. After a brief hiatus, Toto resumes their recording and release their first live album entitled Absolutely Live in 1993. The album features a cover of Weezer's song Hash Pipe as a response to the band's coverage of Africa during their recent tour.
