The Band Toto Asia
Toto was expanding its production facilities abroad and doing business in France, Germany, Indonesia, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and the People's Republic of China. North America was seen as an area of growth for bidet and washlet toilet seats, in contrast to its "base" markets in Japan and China.
Dhaniram Toto documented Toto words so that the next generation could read the words. However, many words were being replaced with foreign words, such as dui from Bengali for verandah.
Origins
Toto's early history which began in 1917, was a reflection of Japan's rapid economic expansion. In the beginning, Toto manufactured products to meet the growing demand for modern, contemporary urban housing. To achieve this, it employed the first tunnel kiln in the nation to produce ceramics in a continuous flow. It also pioneered the use of automation to control production, which allows for greater efficiency and consistency.
The company began expanding its operations overseas in the late 1980s to take advantage of new markets and sales opportunities. The company established the Cera Trading Company to import and distribute other products from other manufacturers in order to enhance its own line of sanitary earthenwares and plumbing fittings. This strategy increased sales and increased the company's market share in the world.
In the 1990s Toto began to concentrate on research and development for water-related appliances. It also improved its distribution system to better meet the needs of customers and boost profits. The company used the same just-in-time approach to its supply chain management as well as sales program. This resulted in a higher level customer satisfaction.
Toto continued to develop toilet technology. Its most recent toilet, for instance it has an extremely powerful tornado flush that is more environmentally friendly than conventional toilets. The company uses recycled water for its manufacturing process, and has a green buying policy. Apart from toilets, Toto manufactures faucets and bathtubs and hand dryers that are more efficient in terms of energy consumption than standard models.
The first museum of the company opened in 2015 It has exhibits about Toto's iconic products and their evolution and its group companies (all having to do with ceramics) as well as the history of plumbing and other products like bath units and, in a separate gallery, Toto products sold around the world. The museum houses the bathroom equipped with a WASHLET as well as other toilet innovations.
Before the formation of Toto the band, members of the band did sessions for many musicians. Boz Scaggs album Silk Degrees featured keyboardist David Paich, guitarists Mike Porcaro & Steve Lukather and drummer Jeff Porcaro & Steve Lukather. They also performed on records by Steely Dan, Seals and Crofts, and Sonny and Cher.
Discography
It is common for a group with a name like Asia to be a prog band, but it is actually a fairly straight forward rock band. The group started out as a quartet and recorded two albums: 1979's self-titled debut, and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. The group has a wide musical background but their biggest success came in 1982 when they released Toto IV.
The album was a massive blockbuster but not without its difficulties. The record companies placed Toto under pressure to release the top single or they would rescind the album. Luckily for Toto they delivered with the aid of the smash single "Africa."
Toto's musical mastery is a result of their previous experiences. Before joining the group, the members were session musicians for artists such as Boz Scaggs. Steely Dan and Seals and Crofts. Their distinctive sound has become the standard for 1980s music, and has inspired a lot of contemporary artists.
The album starts out hard with songs such as Running Out of Time or Unknown Soldier that show the band's ability to write great AOR songs that slowly sink into your head. The album also contains jazzier, slower tracks like The Little Things and Chinatown. And the album ends with Great Expectations, a song that combines folk with distorted AOR and sounds like a complete flop, but is incredibly effective.
After Toto IV The band's fortunes changed to the downside. David Hungate left to concentrate on his solo career and the band was through various drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball left the group due to drug charges. The band continued to play with Michael Porcaro, Steve Lukather and Michael Porcaro.
Despite the turbulence, Toto forged ahead and released Isolation however, which was not as successful as IV. The group managed to release a chart-topping album, Kingdom of Desire, in 1992. This album marked the end of the original Toto lineup and was also the first album featuring the new singer, Simon Phillips.

Line-up
The band's third album, Turn Back, marked the return to the traditional sextet style of previous albums. It was a more powerful, constant effort with an edge that was more pronounced than Hydra. Its edgier sound reflected the maturation of the group and featured drummer Bobby Kimball's increased virtuosity on drums, and an improved, mature vocal delivery from singer Joseph Williams. Keyboardist David Paich's work also was more refined, sharper and less cloying than earlier recordings.
After touring to promote the album, the band recorded a live show in Amsterdam which was released as a two-CD set entitled Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The group released a new studio album a few months later and then embarked on a world tour to support it. In this time keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich, and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.
In 1998, Paich & Lukather began exploring old tapes and demos to find songs that hadn't been recorded prior to. The album was released in 2001 and released as a double album called Then and Now. It was the first album in the history of the band not to include any single song that had the word "A" in its title and it included one previously unreleased track, "Kari-Anne".
By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial failure, and singer Williams suffered from a bad laryngitis infection which limited his singing capabilities. In addition, Hungate returned to Nashville as a drummer, and Leland Sklar was replaced by Shem von Schroeck.
Downes, Wetton Palmer and Howe, the original members of Asia were in England in the beginning of 2006 to discuss the possibility that the band could be reformed. The group, which was missing Howe who was working with Yes at the period, was later renamed Toto XIV. They toured extensively.
In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The band also featured an appearance by singer Michael McDonald, and a backing singer named Mabvuto Carpenter.
