Toto was founded in 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro, David Paich (who at the time were also acclaimed studio musicians working with Boz Scaggs) and singer/bassist Bobby Kimball. When they record the band's fifth album, the band loses their manager and is financially in trouble. They decide to change their name and create a new album with an entirely new producer. Lead vocalist Fergie Frederiksen leaves the band and is replaced by Joseph Williams, son of legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph Williams is a natural frontman and gives the band a much-needed boost.
The band releases Mindfields in 1999 and embarks on a massive worldwide tour. After a few months in Europe they travel to Japan where the shows are sold out. After a brief break, Toto resumes recording and goes on to record their first live album, Absolutely Live in 1993 which includes an original cover of Weezer's song Hash Pipe in response to the band's cover of their hit Africa on a recent tour. Toto's touring lineup is completed by drummer Lenny Castro, bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem von Schroeck.
