The Band Toto Asia

Toto was expanding its production facilities overseas, and was doing business in France and Germany, Indonesia, Korea and Taiwan, Thailand and the People's Republic of China. Toto considered North America as a growth market for Washlet's bidets and toilets, as opposed to its "base" markets of Japan and China.

Dhaniram Toto was documenting Toto words to ensure the next generation would be able to read them. However, many words were being replaced with foreign ones, such as dui from Bengali for verandah.

Origins

Toto's early history that began in 1917, was a reflection of Japan's economic growth. In the beginning, Toto manufactured goods to meet the demand for modern, new urban housing. It used the first tunnel kiln in the country that could produce ceramics continuously. It also pioneered automation for production control, allowing greater efficiency and consistency.

The company began expanding internationally in the latter part of the 1980s to take advantage of new markets and sales opportunities. The company created the Cera Trading Company to import and distribute other manufacturers' products in order to expand its range of sanitary earthenwares and plumbing fittings. This strategy helped increase sales and expand the market share of the company globally.

In the late 1990s, Toto had shifted its focus to research and development of water-related household appliances. It also upgraded its distribution system to better meet the needs of its customers and to increase profits. The company used the same just-in time approach in its supply chain management as well as sales program. This led to a higher level of satisfaction with the customer.

Toto has been able to continue to innovate on the toilet technology. Its most recent toilet, for instance it has a powerful tornado flush that is more environmentally green than traditional toilets. The company uses recycled water in its manufacturing process and has a green buying policy. In addition to toilets Toto manufactures faucets and bathtubs and hand dryers that are more energy efficient than standard models.

The first Toto museum opened in the year 2015. It features exhibits on Toto’s seminal products as well as their evolution, group companies (all of which are made from ceramics) and the history of plumbing, and products such as bath units. In another gallery, visitors can view Toto products sold all over. The museum even has a bathroom that features a WASHLET toilet as well as other toilet-related innovations.

Before the formation of Toto the members of the group performed session work for various musicians. Keyboardist David Paich, drummer Jeff Porcaro and guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather all played on the album Silk Degrees by Boz Scaggs. They also appeared on records by Steely Don, Seals and Crofts and Sonny and Cher.

Discography

With a name as evocative as Asia you'd expect the group to be prog kings and queens however, it's actually a pretty straight forward rock band. The group started out as a group and recorded two albums: 1979's self-titled debut album, and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. But even though the band have a wide range of musical backgrounds their biggest breakthrough came in 1982 with Toto IV.

The album was a huge blockbuster, but not without its share of issues. The record companies put the band under pressure to release an album that was a success or they would drop the album. Toto was able achieve this with the help from the hit song "Africa."

Toto's musical mastery is a result of their prior experience. Before joining the group, the members worked as session musicians for artists such as Boz Scaggs. Steely Dan and Seals and Crofts. Their sonic signature has since become the standard for pop music from the 1980s, and has influenced many contemporary artists.

The album starts out hard with songs such as Running Out of Time or Unknown Soldier that show the band's ability to write fantastic AOR tunes that slowly creep into your head. But the album also contains some slower, more jazzy tracks such as The Little Things and Chinatown. The album closes with Great Expectations. This song is a mix of folk and distortion AOR, which should seem like a complete blunder, but is very effective.

After Toto IV the band's fortunes began to decline. David Hungate left the band to pursue a solo career, and the band had several drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball left the group due to drug charges. The band continued to play with Michael Porcaro, Steve Lukather and Michael Porcaro.

Toto released Isolation despite the turbulence. It was not as popular as IV. However, the group was able to release a chart-topping album in the year 1992 with Kingdom of Desire. This album marked Toto's final lineup and the debut of Simon Phillips, a new vocalist.

Steve Lukather and Joe Williams have forged a deep and vibrant friendship that flourishes professionally on a global scale. Turn Back, the band's third studio album, was an ode to the classic sextet structure and it was a more consistent, more powerful effort that had a more grittier edge. Its edgier sound was a reflection of the maturation of the group, with drummer Bobby Kimball's increased ability on the drums and a more mature, confident vocal delivery by singer Joseph Williams. David Paich's keyboard playing was as well more refined, more precise, and less derivative on previous recordings.

After touring to promote their album, the band recorded their Amsterdam live concert which was released on Eagle Records as a 2-CD set titled Falling In Between. The group released a brand new studio album a few months after and then embarked on a world tour to support it. In this time keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich, and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.

In 1998, Paich and Lukather started exploring old demo tapes and tapes to make an album that would feature songs that were never recorded before. The album was released in 2001 as a double album called Then and Now. It was the first album by the band without one single track titled "A". The album also included a previously unreleased track titled "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth record, Old Is New was an uncommercial success and vocalist Williams was suffering from laryngitis, which restricted his singing capabilities. Hungate also returned to Nashville and Leland Sklar's drumming duties were replaced by Shem Von Schroeck.

Downes, Wetton Palmer and Howe, the original members of Asia were in England in the beginning of 2006 to discuss the possibility that the band could be revived. This lineup, minus Howe who was working with Yes at the time, was renamed Toto XIV. They toured extensively.

In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The band also had a special appearance by singer Michael McDonald and a backing vocalist named Mabvuto Carver.
