Macau's final appeals court upheld an 18-year sentence for Alvin Chau-Chukwa (file photo), the former president of the now-defunct Macau casino junket Suncity Group, with Chau's lawyer and Macau's prosecutor's office each rejecting the appeal, according to a ruling released Wednesday.

In an October ruling, a second trial court upheld an 18-year sentence for Chow. But some of the other defendants had their sentences reduced. Those sentences were confirmed in a final appeals court ruling on Wednesday.

A final appeals court ordered Chau and his colleagues to pay nearly HK$24.87 billion (US$3.18 billion) to the Macau government as a way of compensating for profits made from illegal gambling. They were acquitted of having to pay compensation to the Macau government for profits made through money laundering activities.

Previously, a second trial court ordered the group to pay about HK$25.51 billion. The amount includes compensation for profits from illegal gambling operations and profits from money laundering activities.

In mid-January 2023, Chau was sentenced to a total of 18 years in prison by Macau's first trial court. The founder of the Suncity Group, along with 20 others, was charged with illegal gaming, criminal organization, fraud, and money laundering.
