Cabinet officials in the Philippines have yet to discuss calls to ban Filipino offshore game operators (POGOs), which have been repeatedly raised by several sources within the country's political establishment.
The Philippine Entertainment Gaming Company (Pagcor), a game regulator in the Philippines, approved a new regulation for POGO, now called the "Internet Game License" (IGL), in July last year.
On Tuesday, National Economic Development Agency (NEDA) Minister Arsenio Balisakan noted that the idea of banning online licenses had not been discussed so far among cabinet officials, Manila news agency reported.
In September last year, Ballysakan reportedly told the country's leader, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr, that he would recommend banning POGO operations, adding that what he described as a legitimate investment should instead be encouraged.
Treasury Secretary Ralph Recto recently noted that he would recommend suspending POGO operations because of recent issues.
Pagcor previously said some PGO licensees have made the sector less reputable due to factors such as tax avoidance, illegal employment and failure to pay proper fees.
Labor Minister Bienvenido Lagzema quoted in the Manila Bulletin that the agency would be ready to support workers in the sector if there were changes to the regulatory environment.
