Macau VIP Share Achieves 25pct Of GGR In Q1

VIP Baccarat generated MOPs of $14.38 billion ($1.78 billion) in revenue in Macau in the first quarter of 2024, accounting for 25.1% of the gaming gross revenue (GGR) of nearly MOPs of $57.33 billion during the period. That's information about casinos in the city, according to data released Tuesday by the Bureau of Game Inspection and Coordination, a Macau casino regulator.

The VIP segment saw a 13.2% quarter-over-quarter increase in revenue and a 67.9% year-over-year increase.

In the three months to March 31, sales in the public market baccarat rose 3.1% sequentially to MOP34.59 billion, giving it a market share of about 60.3%.

Popular market baccarat sales were up 68.7% year-over-year, accounting for about 115.7% of earnings in the first quarter of 2019, the last trading year before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Slot machine sales were close to 3.2 billion MOPs with a market share of about 5.6%. It was up 8.4% quarter-on-quarter, and up 31.5% from a year ago.

Total revenue for the entire mass market segment, including slot machines, amounted to just MOP $42.95 billion, representing 74.9% of Macau casino GGR from January to March.

The latest full mass market GGR quarterly results equate to 110.3% of the MOPs of 38.94 billion achieved in the same period in 2019.

Earlier this month, banking group Morgan Stanley said it expected the Macau casino industry's earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) to grow by a total of 5% in the first quarter of the year, compared with the last three months of 2023.

The agency said it expects Macau's gaming industry first-quarter EBITDA of just under $1.95 billion, reaching about 81% of 2019 levels.
