Changing the Battery in Your Mini Key Fob
The key fob can be a convenient option to lock and unlock your car from a distance. It can also activate your car's panic button that can stop burglaries.
If your device ceases to function the device can be repaired with a few easy steps. Make sure that the battery is brand new. Remove the battery from the ignition and then press the lock button quickly three times.
Battery
Change the battery in your key fob is one of the easiest solutions. The device uses a small coin-shaped 3V battery (CR2032 or CR2025) that is usually accessible in general stores as well as home improvement shops and even some auto parts stores. Use a new battery. Old batteries can harm the circuit boards and are no longer useful.
You'll need to start by opening the fob. It may be a bit tight, but with the aid of a flat screwdriver, you will be able split the halves. After that, slide the screwdriver into the seams on both sides of the fob, and then lift a couple of clips that hold it. These can be easily damaged, so be careful and work slowly.
After replacing the battery then reassemble the fob and check to see if everything is working just as it should. If it isn't working after pressing the button several times, check that the contacts are clean. You could also try it with a spare fob to determine if the issue is not specific to the key. If it is not, there could be another reason that caused the key fob to not work. It could be due to a worn-out button, for instance. This would cause the button to function periodically, not continuously.
Interference
The key fob has an insignificant transmitter to send an audio signal that is short-range to a receiver in your vehicle. Its primary function is to allow your car to recognize the fob and open its doors when you approach it and to start when you press the ignition button inside.
The problem is that interference can sometimes hinder the communication. For example, if you are using your second-generation Apple Pencil charged while you're holding the fob, it can stop you from unlocking the car (via iGeneration).
Other electronic devices operating on the same frequency can also interfere with the fob's signal. This includes garage door openers and tire pressure monitoring systems. It's possible that an RF transmitter in your home might interfere with the fob's signal, however, this is difficult to determine without a professional test.
It's possible that your key fob needs to be changed in its programming. This requires the transmitter inside your fob to become recognized by the receiver in your Mini and a unique code is assigned to each pairing. Fobs typically need to be changed when they're disconnected or replaced, when you purchase a replacement, and in some cases when the battery is changed. To reprogram a fob follow the instructions in the user's manual of your device or visit a dealer for assistance.
Faulty chip
Modern electronic key fobs offer the convenience and functionality of traditional manual keys, however they are also more susceptible to being damaged. A malfunctioning chip is one of the most frequent issues that could stop the key fob from working correctly. This is usually a simple fix.
If your car key fob isn't able to turn on, it could be an indication of a damaged chip. The problem can usually be solved by replacing the battery which is inexpensive and easy to locate at the hardware store or a big-box retailer. Be sure to buy an alternative battery that is compatible with your specific model of vehicle to avoid any further issues.
The fob should also not be exposed to water or soapy residue. Water will often cause corrosion, which can cause problems with the circuit board. If this is the case, you'll have to wash it by using isopropyl or electronic cleaner before putting in a new battery.
It is a good idea to test the functioning of the fob prior driving the vehicle. With a voltmeter, test the voltage of the new battery to see whether it's at a safe level. If not, you could need to replace the entire remote chip. A certified technician from a dealer can determine the best option for your vehicle.
