Keyless Entry For Your Jaguar XK

Jaguar has left out the highly desired ability to control the convertible top operation using the remote key fob. This would be a great feature, since it would lessen the wind sway while driving the XK.

If your Jaguar XF key fob is no longer working or has an effective range that has diminished it's time to replace the battery. Here's how to replace the battery.

Keyless Entry System

Think about upgrading to keyless entry on your Jaguar XE if you've ever spent a few minutes digging around in your pockets or purse to find your keys, before hurrying to get out. This feature provides a level convenience and safety that many people are drawn to. The Jaguar key fob will be able to detect when you're within range of your XE. When the key fob is in close proximity to your car you can open it by grabbing the door handle or pressing a luggage compartment release button.

Your Jaguar key fob comes with an electronic chip that enables it to connect with the Jaguar's computer system and unlock doors as well as operate the windows and sunroof and even remotely start your engine. The key fob comes with rubber seals that shield it from water damage. However, it's important to remove it from the holder in order to clean any exposed electronic components with isopropyl and a paper towel. Submerging the key in soapy water or salty water can damage the circuitry, requiring the replacement of the key fob.

The Jaguar XK keyfob comes with an option to "double-lock" your vehicle. This gives you additional security against theft. G28 may not function due to various reasons such as an insufficient battery within the keyfob as well as a key that is not properly paired. The dealer will have to reprogramme the key.

Transponder Chip Keys

Jaguar introduced a brand new key model for its cars in 1998. It required special equipment to program. The keys have a transponder chip inside, which disarms the vehicle's standard immobiliser system. The keys need to be added to Jaguar's database, which is typically handled by a locksmith or dealer. Contrary, not all locksmiths or dealers are trained to handle this kind of key. In fact, some have been recognized for charging too much Jaguar owners for their services.

Tibbe Keys

Some Jaguars of the 1990s used what's called a Tibbe Key. They require special equipment because they feature flat cuts with precise angles on four sides. These keys cannot be interchanged with regular keys, and the majority of locksmiths do not have the equipment to cut them. This could lead to lengthy wait times for owners who need replacements. Dealerships may be able to cut these, but they typically cost a significant amount.

The lock itself is interesting, as it consists of 6 or 8 rotary discs that need to be properly aligned in order for the sidebars to fall into position and let the door or trunk lock. This is accomplished by using a specially-designed pick/decoder tool that looks kind of like a drill bit, and the process can be challenging. It is essential to remember that this tool must ONLY be put into the DOOR lock, NEVER the trunk lock or ignition in this manner. Doing so will cause it to jam and break.

There are only a handful of locksmiths that are experts in Tibbe keys and their prices are based on many factors including time and effort, the cost of consumables, equipment and so on. The adapter kit designed specifically to work with these kinds of keys can cost a few hundred dollars, and each must be set up by hand (or a skilled programer can use a computerized key machine) for every new key made.

Key Fob Battery Replacement

It's essential to have an extra battery on hand. If your key fob stops responding to buttons or no longer responds to them, it's time to replace it. You might also see your Message Center alerting you that your battery is not fully charged.

The good news is that replacing the battery inside your Jaguar key fob is easy and can take only a few minutes in your home garage. The first step is to open the key fob with the flat-head screwdriver or fingernail. There are typically two seams where the fob's halves meet, and you will be able to carefully pry them apart to expose the blade of emergency key.

When the fob is fully open, you can slide the key blade back to remove the cover and reveal the old battery. The battery will appear like an actual coin with the sign of a plus and minus on one side. Make sure you insert the battery from similar to the original and then orient it properly.

Be sure to handle the new battery only from its sides; touching it from the top or bottom can transfer moisture and reduce the battery's life. Reassemble the fob, and test the buttons on the remote to see if they work again. If you need assistance you can contact your local Jaguar Annapolis service professionals.
