First open training, Director Morales "Don't be afraid to make mistakes and attack"

2 consecutive years of sluggish 'VNL defeat'

FIVB fell to 40th place in the world ranking

Morales "without relying on a particular player

We will develop a creative attack route."

It's full of energy in the training

Kang So Hwi, "The mood is getting better"

On the afternoon of the 1st, the women's national volleyball team's open training ground at Chung-Ang Girls' High School Gymnasium in Bukahyeon-dong, Seodaemun-gu, Seoul, showed unusual expressions of the players, who were full of seriousness and confidence in the training reminiscent of the actual game. The players' lively laughter made them realize the team's atmosphere that was different from before, as much as the sound of the ball ringing the court. Fernando Morales, the new coach at the helm, instilled confidence in the players by repeatedly ordering them to "play aggressively without being afraid of mistakes." The women's volleyball team, under the new leadership of Morales, began its call-up training in preparation for the 2024 International Volleyball Federation FIVB Volleyball Nations League VNL in Jincheon, North Chungcheong Province on the 15th of last month.

Under former coach César Hernández González, the Korean women's volleyball team has been sluggish in the international arena, with only two consecutive defeats in the VNL event. Participation in the 2024 Paris Olympics was also canceled. As a result, the Korean women's volleyball team, which sought to join the single-digit world rankings, has seen its ranking drop to 40th in the FIVB world rankings as of May 2024.

From Puerto Rico, Morales stressed the need for tactical and strategic changes to secure the international competitiveness of Korean women's volleyball, taking advantage of his experience leading the generational change of the national team and the rise of the world ranking up to 16th. He also called for fast game management in line with the trend of modern volleyball and various creative attacks that are difficult for opponents to predict. To this end, he stressed the need for smooth communication with not only players but also V-League clubs.

The most noticeable point in the open training is Morales, who emphasizes to the players, "Do not fear mistakes and play aggressively" throughout the training. "Korean players' defense and serve are world-class, but they lack attack," Morales said, suggesting that Korean women's volleyball, which has had difficulty attacking since the retirement of "Volleyball Empress" Kim Yeon-kyung Heungkuk Life Insurance, should use various attack options rather than attacks focused on specific players.

In fact, during the training session on the day, he continued to use various attack options, ranging from strikers' use of both wings, to middle blockers' active participation in attacks and attempts to back-center offensives. The players' facial expressions changed following the coach's detailed instructions.

Excluding Lee Sun-woo Director Jeong, who underwent shoulder recovery training, 15 players took turns to carry out the training like a real game, and the constant laughter was also impressive. The players were also able to see them gain more confidence by increasing the number of central and rear attacks that they were not familiar with.

Kang So-hwi Korea Expressway Corporation, a leading striker in the Korean women's volleyball league, said, "Over the past two years, I had lost confidence because I had lost the VNL matches, but the team's mood has improved a lot. My goal is at least one win in this VNL match." Jeong Ji-yoon Hyundai Engineering & Construction who finished supplementary training with Lee Da-hyun and others after two hours of regular training also said, "I will come back with a victory so as not to go against fans' expectations."

The women's volleyball team will invite the V-League women's coach to the Jincheon Training Center on Thursday for an open training session, before departing for Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the first stage of the VNL event on Thursday. She will then move to Arlington, Texas, and Fukuoka, Japan, where she will play a total of 12 games for the preliminary round.
