Athletes from 78 countries who participated in Gangwon 2024 gathered at the closing ceremony held in the square in front of the auxiliary stadium of the Gangneung Hockey Center in Gangwon-do at 8 p.m. on the 1st to bid farewell and enjoy their last night in Korea.

1,800 players participated in this tournament, and because some players who finished the game early had already left Korea, only a few players from each country attended the closing ceremony.

Gangwon 2024, which opened with the theme ‘We shine when we are together’, closed with the message ‘Let’s shine again’ at the end of the competition.

The athletes, wearing thick coats and winter hats and shaking their bodies to exciting music, were centered around a stage with a large electronic display board in the background, while the snow was falling.

After the countdown to signal the start of the closing ceremony, International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach When he appeared, he was welcomed with applause.

According to the order of Korean consonants, flag corps members from 78 countries participating in Gangwon 2024 entered the stage, went down the stage one by one holding their national flags, and passed between athletes from each country lined up on both sides.

Kim Hyun-gyeom (Han Gwang-go), the star of this competition who won two gold medals in the men's figure skating single and team events, was the last to leave the stage holding the Taegeukgi.

Soon after, edited videos posted on social networking services (SNS) by players participating in Gangwon 2024 enjoying the tournament and Korean culture brought back precious memories for the players.

In addition, the players gave a warm applause to the volunteers, who were the hidden contributors to the success of this tournament, and six players representing Korea and the five continents went on stage and expressed their gratitude by handing bouquets of flowers to the six volunteers.

Choi Jong-gu, Chairman of the Gangwon 2024 Organizing Committee, said, “At this tournament, I was able to witness the passion and excellent skills of young athletes from all over the world.

I hope that the days spent in Gangwon-do will be a precious time for the athletes and an opportunity to develop each of their potential.”

“I hope so,” he asked.

He then expressed his gratitude again to the 1,984 volunteers who showed their enthusiasm, saying, “The volunteers’ dedication and service created such a wonderful festival.”

Chairman Bach said, “I would like to express my gratitude to all the athletes who participated in the competition and showed good skills.”

He also encouraged the athletes from each country to respond positively, saying, “Let us also send a loud thank you to the Gangwon 2024 Organizing Committee, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province, and the Korean government.”

When Gangwon 2024's mascot Mungcho and six volunteers threw snowflakes at the digital torch, the flame that illuminated the competition for 14 days was slowly extinguished, bringing to an end the 4th Winter Youth Olympic Games held for the first time on the Asian continent.

The IOC plans to decide the location of the 5th Games, which will be held in 4 years, at a general meeting late this year or early next year.
