Media should then be notified of the platform’s intention to delete or restrict their content alongside a 24-hour window for the media to respond. If after this period the platform still considers the media content fails to comply with its terms and conditions, they can proceed with deleting, restricting or referring the case to national regulators to take the final decision without delay. As detailed in the methodology section, two specific news-related Turkish queries (“son dakika” and “haberler”) regularly channel millions of users to these outlets’ content everyday. Trending searches, on the other hand, are another substantial traffic source, although they change from one day to another. Today, journalism still survives in Turkey in a less centralized, much more fragmented, and almost wholly digital media landscape.
This type of media systems neglect areas of low population (e.g., rural communes) and high deprivation levels, causing these to be underserved and underrepresented in the news coverage. In turn, this creates a full cycle when public policies and politicians overlook sectors of the population that are less informed and hence, are less likely to influence the status quo of the political elite. To extend our model and study the influence of other factors such as the political and socioeconomic characteristics in the distribution of news media followers, we use a regression model.
Half of the top ten newsbrands in the UK saw month-on-month audience growth in May. Of the four top ten newsbrands that saw a month-on-month fall in audience (BBC, Mirror, Manchester Evening News and Mail Online) none dropped by over 5%. The Telegraph website was the fastest-growing top ten newsbrand by audience size in September, according to Press Gazette’s ranking of the UK’s top 50 biggest names in news. Instead most of the top ten newsbrands saw audience falls, with three newsbrands recording double-digit month-on-month falls in audience. The Independent’s audience was down 16% to 19.4 million people, Mail Online’s audience was down 13% to 21.2 million people and Metro was down 12% to 17.4 million people.
Placement in these business outlets can drive awareness, interest, and engagement across a company’s key audiences. The resonant stories range from profiles of up-and-coming brands, Q&As with CEOs, and features on new product launches to thoughtful columns on innovation and leadership. For B2B companies especially, coverage in these tier-one business outlets lends immense credibility. While earning coverage in top-tier news media outlets may be your initial aspiration, it may not be where your company would see the most benefit.
Featuring a massive cross-platform network of channels and insight, the outlet covers everything from breaking news to entertainment. London dominates the media sector in the United Kingdom as national newspapers, television and radio networks are largely based there. It is typically available from around 6am at London commuter stations and is handed out at key points in the City, Canary Wharf and other central London locations. Manchester Evening News (32% reach) was the best-ranked regional newsbrand in tenth place overall, while a number of US newsbrands featured among July’s top 50. Best-ranked among them was The New York Times (ranked 20, audience of 8.5 million people). Sky News was the only top ten newsbrand by audience size to see double-digit month-on-month growth in July, according to Press Gazette’s ranking of the UK’s top 50 biggest newsbrands. The BBC was once again the biggest newsbrand by audience (37.7 million visitors). It was followed by The Sun (27.7 million visitors, down 1%), The Mirror and Mail Online.

A population with limited access to the news is less informed and, consequently, less likely to hold authorities responsible for public expenditure and providing broad public welfare [10, 11]. In turn, this motivates the incumbent to prioritize and divert resources to places where they will receive more media coverage and not necessarily where they are most needed. According to Chomsky and Herman [1], these characteristics make the news media system comparable to a political scheme where votes are weighted by income. The list of popular sources these panelists turn to for political and government news often parallels the list of sources they are most likely to trust. When comparing 2021 to 2022 data, only two media outlets experienced double-digit audience growth on social media, Reuters (13.2%) and CNBC (15.2%). This tells me that most other outlets have leveled off regarding social media audience growth.
Its monthly data now includes webpages consumed within other mobile app embedded browsers such as LinkedIn, Twitter, Google News and Instagram, as well as Facebook which has been counted in its data since 2021. Ipsos has also updated its total internet population figures to align with the latest Pamco survey estimates. As a result, Press Gazette has not made comparisons with previous monthly data. Tenth-place Manchester Evening News, one of Reach’s best-known regional brands, was the leading local news title (17.1m people, 34% reach). As well as commanding the biggest audience, the BBC was also the most engaged-with news brand by far.
It was followed by The Sun (27.9 million visitors, 56% reach) and Mail Online (24.5 million visitors, 49% reach) which overtook last month’s third biggest site the Mirror. Both the Mirror and Mail Online however saw slightly fewer visitors in September compared to August, and as a consequence saw their reach fall to just below 50%. Audiences spent 9.3 billion minutes with its content in December - over four times as much as second-best placed Mail Online (2 billion minutes) and 11 times as much as third-placed ITV (819.6 million minutes). Among the top 50 as a whole, lifestyle and culture brands performed well for year-on-year growth, although fastest-growing was Reach regional Nottinghamshire Live (audience of 5.3 million, up 102% year-on-year). It was followed by Time Out (4.4 million, up 64%), which closed its print edition last year after 54 years of publication and Glamour UK (3.4 million, up 52%).

Keep in mind that getting covered by the top-tier media is really challenging. To have better results when pitching, you might want to start by targeting smaller, relevant media outlets and see where it gets you. When the funding issue arose, we had been around for three years, and there were only a few months left before the full-scale invasion. With the outbreak of the full-fledged war, we received our first grant — but the work of the editorial office changed dramatically. Over half of the newsbrands in our ranking saw more engagement in July with several seeing particularly large increases in engagement. The BBC scored best for engagement as audiences spent a total of ten billion minutes with its content in September, placing it well ahead of second place Mail Online (2.1 billion minutes).

CNN (20%) and local television (16%) are the most frequently-named top sources, with a long list of other news sources named by fewer than one-in-ten. Fox News (8%) is among the most-named sources in this “long tail,” along with Yahoo News (7%) and Google News (6%), both of which primarily aggregate and highlight news produced by other outlets. Among consistent liberals, CNN (15%), NPR (13%), MSNBC (12%) and the New York Times (10%) all rank near the top of the list. CNN is named by just 20% of those with mostly liberal views, but still tops their list, followed by local television (11%) and NPR (9%).

We used the KT correlations to have an indication of how strong is the influence of each factor in the prediction. Figures 5(a), 5(b) and 5(c) show the distribution of the KT correlation for the top 25 news outlets in Santiago with respect to the communes’ political leaning, expected income and distance to the origin, respectively. Results are shown regarding their absolute values because the direction of impact is not important for our model.
