Have you considered that if you were able to just “get sober” and then stop using drugs and alcohol that all of your problems would be solved and you would live a great life?

Addiction recovery is much more than just an absence of drugs and alcohol in your system.  Recovery from substance addiction is a complex journey – while the road might be in the right direction, it is often filled with bumps, turns and twists.  There are hardships, obstacles and difficult people along the way.  However, it is a journey that everyone who is recovering from addiction must go along so that they can move forwards towards freedom from drugs and alcohol.  This is why recovery does not begin with abstinence: it begins with hope.

Read on to find out why hope is so important in recovery, in this article from people that have been there and done that.

What is hope in addiction?

Beliefs and expectations are important elements of hope; elements which block pain and have vital effects of physiological processes.  Hope can help people heal.  Instead of wishing that something will happen – hope is concrete evidence that a thing will happen.  Hope allows individuals to approach challenges in their lives with a positive mindset and a feeling of desire for things to happen.  Hope can keep people going.

Why is hope important for recovery?

Recovery is filled with challenges and frustration.  Having goals for your recovery is a great start, but it is not always enough.  In fact, you have to go something to focus on – and that “something” is hope.  Hope is not about wishful thing – it is the very foundation of your recovery.  Without hope it will be difficult for you to find meaningful actions.  Hope will lead you in the right direction, and with action, you can find the bedrock of your recovery.

How to get hope

When you are in the throes of addiction, it is difficult to see what a life beyond substances might entail  Hope is always around, it is just a matter of seeing it.  Sometimes getting hope will come with ease – other times, getting hope takes tremendous strength.  Either way, you should know that hope is always available for you.

1.  Listen to stories of hope

Stories of recovery are found all over the internet.  Stories of success can also be heard at meetings and shared by friends who are in recovery.  Not only do stories like these inspire recovery, but they also give you an insight on how you can find and then sustain your own hope, even when things are getting difficult.  Sharing your story with others won’t just help them, but it will also give you hope and a sense of peace, knowing that you are doing for people what others have done for you.

2.  Accept your situation

Accepting situations in life can be difficult, especially when things get tough.  Remember the denial which once filled your life?  Accepting what is going on in your current situation then seeing the reality at face value takes plenty of courage.  Though the situation might not be where you want to be – this can help you focus on what you actually want, and the steps that you can take to get it.  Taking control of your life beings with acceptance.

3. Getting a direction for life

Look at the life that you have now, and your hopes for the future.  In addition to your freedom from addiction, what else is important to you?  Your parents?  Your career?  Having a family?  Traveling?  Looking forward to positives in the future and looking at goals and how you might achieve them can help you to build a purpose for living and working each day towards your long term recovery.  Finding a direction in life means boosting your level of hope.

4. Develop a plan

Making a plan for a brighter and healthier future will allow you to build hope.  Your plan helps you create actions in your road to recovery.  Each step that you are able to take will bring you closer to your vision.  This will further fuel hope in your recovery.

The road of recovery won’t always be easy – but with hope, it becomes more meaningful.  With hope, you are sure to find a way that you can keep going and fight for your health and happiness, and recovery from your addictions.
