Steel pipes are given an extra layer of resilience to keep up with their strenuous tasks. Through a process known as galvanization, these pipes are coated with zinc to create an impenetrable shield that protects them from deterioration. Such strong pipes are employed in a multitude of areas from plumbing and construction to agriculture.

Many sizes and thicknesses of Schedule 40 galvanized steel pipe are available. Half, three-quarters, one, and one-and-a-quarter inch diameters are the most popular. Ten, twelve, fourteen, sixteen, eighteen, twenty, and twenty two-gauge thicknesses are frequently used. The schedule 40 designation denotes a pipe with a thickness of 0.40 of an inch.

Two varieties of galvanized steel piping can be found on the market - hot-dipped and electro-galvanized. In order to create the former, manufacturers plunge the steel into a bath of molten zinc, thereby providing a protective coating. The latter is formed through an electrolytic process that ensures a full coating of zinc.
