If you see damaged wood in your home, look at it closely for what kind of damage it is. If you see that the soft parts of the wood are gone but that the annual rings are intact, you likely have termites. Other forms of damage would be from other forms of insects.

Check to see that all of your food is airtight and sealed efficiently. If food is not sealed properly, it will give off an odor, which will attract a wide range of insects. This could lead to an infestation, which can cost you a lot of time and money in the long run.

If you have a lot of debris and overgrown plants in your yard, you are inviting pests into your home. Litter, debris, overgrown plants, and trash are all great habitats for pests. If these pests are right outside your door, it will take no time before they are inside your home and becoming a problem.

When you are eating food, and you have not finished it, make sure that you store it in sealed containers. If the container you use is not sealed well, it will attract a lot of pests. Use plastic bins or plastic bags that can be sealed, and put them in a place where pests cannot get in.

If you are trying to get rid of pests in your home, you should think carefully if you have children and/or pets. Many of the chemicals that are in pesticides can be harmful to them. Get them out of the house for a few hours if you have no other choice.

Find some pest resistant plants for your garden. It will be a lot easier and cheaper to take care of your garden if your plants are strong enough to keep pest away. You could also introduce some insects such as ladybugs who are know for eating certain kind of pest.

Hornets, wasps, and other dangerous bees (not honey bees) are a seemingly scary problem that can be exterminated easily. Wasp and hornet killer is inexpensive and doesn't require you to be near the nest to use it. Alternatively, hair spray can also be used through products designed to kill wasps/hornets are preferable.

Try talking to friends and family for other tips. If you have a mouse infestation, for example, neighbors may have the same issues. You may find that your neighbor has come up with some solutions that you haven't yet considered. You can also give your neighbor a heads-up about a problem that he may have.

Oil of mustard can be used to repel raccoons that decide to live under your house or in your wall. Just soak a rag in it and place it at the raccoon's point of entrance. The oil should be put in the area that it's living. Once you do this, you need to discover just how the raccoon entered your home. Place mesh wire to make sure it can't come in again.
