The shows prior to the 1980s generally were not able to tell narrative arcs and the main characters and premise did not change much. If there were any changes to the characters' lives during the episode, they were usually undone at the end. Due to this, episodes can be broadcast in any order. The most commonly used terms for the field in general are the big screen, the silver screen cinema, and the movies. The last one is frequently used as an overarching term in academic texts and essays. In the early years in the past, the term "sheet" was employed instead of "screen." Film generally isn't a suitable term to refer to the length of a commercial video production since it is ambiguous and requires context to ensure correct interpretation.

The development of European cinema was disrupted by the outbreak in World War I, while the film industry in the United States flourished with the development of Hollywood and was most notably exemplified by the groundbreaking works by D. W. Griffith in The Birth of a Nation (1915) and Integrity (1916). In the 1920s, however, European filmmakers such as Eisenstein, F. W. Murnau, and Fritz Lang
