Poker has become an extremely popular game, particularly in America. It wasn't that long back that it was thought to be gambling and therefore was not legal in the U.S. until the Court of Arbitration determined that it was a game of luck. Later, with the Second World War, it was re-introduced and since then is a favorite pastime for Americans of all ages and backgrounds. Many people think that it originated in Europe however the reality is that it is found in any European country which includes Portugal, Spain, Germany and Italy. While the exact origins of poker are not known however certain events have shaped the sport into the present form it is today.

One of the primary things that helped shape the popularity of poker was growth of the game in the Renaissance. The king Louis XIV of France, in fact, was no poker player; he played lots of chess. He did play a lot of poker when he wanted to gamble and quickly started collecting and playing high-quality poker chips. It was at this time that the term 'Poker' was derived from 'passing the game'. It was known as pass-the-game and was popular among the upper classes.

Poker games on the internet were first made available to the public in the yearixties. They were first known as holdem games. They began to be played at tables that were regular in local bars and restaurants. The most popular type of card played during these early games was the five-card stud. Although five cards were dealt to five players this was the basis of many successful hands played in poker. It also created a sense of fairness for all players, as nobody could afford losing more than one hand, which made for an interesting poker match.

Bluffing or playing a hand simply to avoid losing, was a favorite trick of many players during the time of. The term "bluffing" was thus birthed. The two-and-a half-card drawing is also well-known. So was the three-card draw, which requires your opponents to discard three, two or four cards from their hand and then reveal cards from their hands to you. Bluffing can be an arduous game to master, and it got more difficult when casino operators added a house edge to the cards.

The next major improvement to poker was the four-suit holdem which is played with seven cards. This meant that there were now two options to play: betting and Bluffing. Bluffing was still possible , but it became more challenging because it was more time-consuming to get all players to give up. Betting was the preferred option, particularly when your hand was strong.

Another poker trick that is popular was the check raise. This involves the player bidding high (passing the wager to another player) and folding their hand. It may sound strange but it makes the game much quicker. If a player raised all the money, then after the betting interval the player may keep it and keep playing. However, when the betting interval is over the player could have to pass the pot, or cease playing. A check raise is usually an attempt to bluff - other players will know that you are lying, therefore they will fold their cards and hand you with the entire pot. This is what makes the game very quick!
