7th Grade Math Syllabus to answer Frequently Asked Questions!

Curriculum

  • Common Core: This course will follow the Common Core Standards for 7th Grade math.  These standards are fairly voluminous, so we recommend that you click (or copy/paste) this link: https://www.cde.ca.gov/be/st/ss/documents/ccssmathstandardaug2013.pdf  into your web browser if you are interested in everything that will be taught in this class this year.  
  • Illustrative Maths: The curriculum for this class is Illustrative Mathematics.  The “textbook” is available online at: https://im.openupresources.org/.   

Communication: Canvas/Aeries

  • We will use Canvas to communicate assigned work.  Additionally, if you need further explanation or examples, most of our lessons are uploaded to Canvas in video form.  You are responsible for checking in to see what is due as all lessons, assignments, videos and class news will be there.
  • We will use Aeries to communicate grades.  Assignments that were assigned while you were absent will be marked missing until that assignment has been turned in.  Please be aware that you are expected to stay after school after you are absent to make up their assignments.  
  • Students, if you need to reach us please send us a private comment in Canvas.
  • Parents should log in to BOTH Canvas (to see what went on in class and what was assigned) and Aeries (to check a student’s grade).  If you have any questions, please email us at ewisner@mammothusd.org & mbrock@mammothusd.org 

Assignments

  • We do not have homework in Math 7 All assignments should be completed within class time, however if you do not finish your work in class, you will need to complete it at home. Practice for each lesson will either be in Khan Academy or Prodigy.  Look in Canvas to see which is assigned and will be graded.  You can always do the other for extra practice.
  • Assignments are graded for ACCURACY & will follow the rubric outlined below:
  • 2/2 = 100% A+            Full Credit Student earns 70% or higher on assignment.        
  • 1/2 = 50%  F          Partial Credit  Student earns 40-69% on assignment.
  • 0/2 = 0%   F           Zero:  Student earns 0-39% on assignment or does not turn the assignment in.

Assessments: Tests & Quizzes

  • 8 point tests will be given at the end of each standard.  
  • 4 point quizzes will be given periodically throughout a standard.  
  • You should study a minimum of 20 minutes for each quiz/ test by looking over your homework and notes from the previous week(s).  

Grading (Academic)

  • Grading category breakdown:
  • Assignments =20%
  • Assessments-Quizzes/Tests/Projects=80%
  • Grading scale: all scores will be rounded to the nearest whole percent.
100% and above = A+        90-99% = A   80-89% = B   70-79% = C   60-69% = D   below 60% = F

Grading (Citizenship)

  • Essential Characteristics for Outstanding Citizenship:
  • Student participates in class
  • Student is rarely tardy
  • Student treats others with respect (including the teacher)
  • Student rarely forgets book(s)/iPad/materials.
Grading rubric:
  • 4-Outstanding:  Student exemplifies all of the Essential Characteristics listed above.  
  • 3-Good:  One of the Essential Characteristics is missing.
  • 2-Satisfactory: Two of the Essential Characteristics are missing.
  • 1-Needs Improvement:  Three of the Essential Characteristics are missing.
  • 0-Unsatisfactory:  All of the Essential Characteristics are missing.

Supply List

In order to be ready before the bell rings, you need to have all of the following items with you every single day you are in class:
  • 5 separate single subject spiral notebooks (these need to be separate notebooks, as you will be turning one in while working on another)
  • Headphones or earbuds
  • At least 2 pencils- mechanical preferred ** All work must be done in PENCIL!  Papers will not be accepted if work is done in pen.
  • Several dry erase markers
  • Several glue sticks (the average student needs 1 per quarter)
  • Scissors
  • Big eraser
  • 2 colored pens (any color)
  • 1 highlighter
*If for any reason you cannot afford or have difficulty obtaining any of the items listed above, please let us know via email or in person (before or after class would be a good time) before the end of the first week of school.  After that time period, we will assume that you are able to get these items on your own and you will be responsible for bringing them to school every day.
