CLASS DESCRIPTION

This class is the highest level in our ESL program. You will learn and practice advanced level speaking, listening, pronunciation, grammar, spelling, and writing. You will review intermediate-level English. You will be expected to participate in various exercises, projects, readings, and tests. This course is designed for two sessions (5-6 months). The lessons will repeat after two quarters.

BURLINGTON ENGLISH

All students are required to use the Burlington English App or Burlington English Website for a minimum of 3 HOURS per WEEK.

Stand Out 3 (2nd & 3rd edition) Stand Out 4 (3rd edition). English in Action 3 & 4, Heinle Picture Dictionary. All Things Grammar/All Things Topics (online).

EL CIVICS EXAM AND VOCABULARY

In this session, the EL Civics topic will be CULTURE. By the end of the quarter, you will be able to communicate your culture through writing and speaking. You will learn about the culture of others through reading and listening. At the end of this session (week 6-8) you will give a presentation to the class about a part of your native culture.

"Why do I have to complete EL Civics? "

The U.S. government wants all residents from other countries to know how to live in English-speaking parts of the United States. You need to know how to find employment and a place to live. You also need to understand how to access necessary public services: medical, legal, and financial.

At the advanced level, you are still required to participate in EL Civics activities and tests. This is an excellent opportunity to practice skills that will help you, and help others live in the United States.

C.A.S.A.S. Reading Exam: Reading assessments are required for all new and continuing students. In order to attend class, you will need to schedule an orientation with Salinas Adult School. All students will need to take CASAS near the end of every quarter.

ATTENDANCE AND PARTICIPATION

Students are expected to attend and practice as much as possible. It is more difficult to learn a language if you don’t come.

You are REQUIRED to bring these items to every class.

PASSING THE CLASS

Students will be evaluated on the completion of the C.A.S.A.S. tests, and E.L. Civics Exams. Certificates may be awarded to passing students.

Where do I go after I’m finished?

After half a year, the lessons will repeat. All students can repeat the course if they want.

Students are also encouraged to do the following:

Promotion to Developing English class. (SAS)
Take citizenship preparation (SAS)
Enroll in a more advanced ESL class (Hartnell College, MPC)
Take a High School Diploma or GED class (SAS)
Get a new job, career, or college education (SAS Career Center)

COVID-19 CLASSROOM RULES & POLICIES

TESTING

All students, teachers, and staff are strongly encouraged to test for COVID-19 regularly. This will make sure that classes continue to be in person. If you test positive or feel sick (even if it’s not COVID) please stay home.

EL EXAMEN CIVICO Y VOCABULARIO

PASAR LA CLASE
