CLASS DESCRIPTION
This class is the highest level in our ESL program. You will learn and practice advanced level speaking, listening, pronunciation, grammar, spelling, and writing. You will review intermediate-level English. You will be expected to participate in various exercises, projects, readings, and tests. This course is designed for two sessions (5-6 months). The lessons will repeat after two quarters.
GRAMMAR
Before this level, you should be familiar with the present, past, and future verb tenses. You will review the perfect tenses. You will also review mixed verb tenses and pronouns. You will also study the language for EL Civics.
BOOKS and MATERIALS
Stand Out 3 (2nd & 3rd edition) Stand Out 4 (3rd edition). English in Action 3 & 4, Heinle Picture Dictionary. All Things Grammar/All Things Topics (online).
BURLINGTON ENGLISH
This year, we will use the Burlington English program. I will give more information about it in the future.
EL CIVICS EXAM AND VOCABULARY
In this session, the EL Civics topic will be employment. By the end of the quarter, students will know how to apply and interview for a job using the English language.
"Why do I have to complete EL Civics? "
The U.S. government wants all residents from other countries to know how to live in English-speaking parts of the United States. You need to know how to find employment and a place to live. You also need to understand how to access necessary public services: medical, legal, and financial.
At the advanced level, you are still required to participate in EL Civics activities and tests. This is an excellent opportunity to practice skills that will help you, and help others live in the United States.
C.A.S.A.S. Reading Exam: Reading assessments are required for all new and continuing students. In order to attend class, you will need to schedule an orientation with Salinas Adult School. All students will need to take CASAS near the end of every quarter.
ATTENDANCE AND PARTICIPATION
Students are expected to attend and practice as much as possible. It is more difficult to learn a language if you don’t come.
Google Classroom and CANVAS
Computer and Smartphone (Android/iPhone) users can join the class on the Google Classroom app in order to get information, and classwork, and give me notice if you are going to be absent.
Canvas
In a few weeks, we will be moving from Google Classroom to the Canvas learning system.
SCHOOL SUPPLIES
You are REQUIRED to bring these items to every class.
- 2 pencils
- Binder (very important!) Binder paper (lined filler paper)

PASSING THE CLASS
Students will be evaluated on the completion of the CASAS tests. Students will need to present classwork and tests in their binder. Certificates will be awarded to passing students.
Where do I go after I’m finished?
