1.3 SDG 3: Good Health and Well being
SDG 3: Good Health and Well being
Significant strides have been made in reducing child mortality, improving maternal health, and tackling HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, and other diseases. However, malaria, tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS all remain in the top 10 causes of death globally but all three are falling significantly. HIV/AIDS has seen the biggest decrease with 59% fewer deaths in 2019 than in 2000. Although people in LMIC are more likely to die from communicable diseases, there is an unprecedented rise in the prevalence of non-communicable diseases in this population. This dual presence of communicable and non-communicable disease strains the health systems of LMIC and is one of the main factors that push households from poverty into deprivation.
SDG 3 aims to ensure health and well-being for all which will be achieved through 13 targets. These include a bold commitment to end the epidemics of AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, and other communicable diseases by 2030. In addition, one of the targets is to achieve universal health coverage and provide access to safe and effective medicines and vaccines for all as well as supporting research and development for vaccines.
