Course Description
Students will learn about the main geographic features of Southern and Eastern Asian, as well as the basics of cartography through formative and summative assessments. This course adheres to Georgia social studies standards for 7th grade.
Student Learning Objectives
SS7G9 Locate selected features in Southern and Eastern Asia. a. Locate on a world and regional political-physical map: Ganges River, Huang He (Yellow River), Chang Jiang (Yangtze) River, Bay of Bengal, Indian Ocean, Sea of Japan, South China Sea, Yellow Sea, Gobi Desert, Taklimakan Desert, Himalayan Mountains, and Korean Peninsula. b. Locate on a world and regional political-physical map the countries of China, India, Japan, North Korea, South Korea, and Vietnam.

Students need a computer and an active internet connection to complete the course. They also need a CANVAS account through instructure.

Learning will be facilitated through classroom discussions, an assignment, participation, and a final quiz.

Discussions
There are four discussions throughout the course, one per week–corresponding to each of the four modules. Discussions are worth 7.5% of the course grade each, meaning that collectively, the discussions are worth 30% of the entire course grade.

Assignments/Projects
The Cartographer’s Challenge is the midpoint project for the four-week course. It is worth 30% of the total grade.

Quizzes
The quiz is the final exam for the quiz. It is a twenty choice, multiple-choice quiz that summarizes all the four weeks’ worth of content. It is worth 40% of the entire course grade.

Learning Activity
Learning activities include diagnostic assessments, vocabulary video games, discussion and participation activities, and YouTube lesson outlines.
Evaluation and Grading Scale
There will be two discussions worth fifteen percent of your grade each. The main course assignment, the Cartographer's Challenge, will be worth thirty percent of your grade. Finally, the end-of-course quiz will be worth forty percent of your grade.
The grading scale is a simple ten-point scale. Anything below 60 is an F, and is a failing grade.

Course Schedule
The schedule of the course consists of four modules, each module lasting one week. Every week there will be a discussion with two separate due dates, the post due dates (wednesdays) and the response due date (sundays). There are other due dates outlined as well.

Module 1: Introduction (2/14-2/20)
This week we will go over the basics of geography. We will also take a minute to share our lives with one another before going further into the course.

Module 2: Geographic Features (2/21-2/27)
The lessons and activities for this week focus on solidifying and strengthening knowledge and retention of vocabulary terms. There will also be discussion on how Southeast Asian geography affects Asian culture, and vice versa.

Module 3: Cartography (2/28-3/6)
This week will begin with a review of geographic basics and vocabulary terms. Then, students will move on to a lesson to introduce cartography, or the science of mapmaking, and will become “apprentice cartographers” themselves through a formative assessment (Cartographer’s Challenge assessment).

Module 4: Review and Conclusion (3/7-3/13)
The week consists of reviewing and studying for the final quiz. All content of the three previous weeks will be included and reinforced through this week’s curriculum.

Course Policies
Late Work/Make-up Policy
Late work and make-up work will not be allowed unless extenuating circumstances arise.
Participation Expectations
Your discussion board contributions are considered your “participation” for the purposes of this class. Make sure to post your full discussion contribution by midnight of the due date, which is the wednesday before the listed date on sunday.
The sunday due date is your due date for contributing three responses to your classmates’ discussions. Small comments such as “I agree” or “great job!” do not count toward your response portion of the participation grade. You need to write three or four (preferably more) full sentences responding to the substance of your classmate’s post.
Online Attendance Policy
Attendance is not marked for a grade, but logging in at least three days a week is required. Logging in five days a week is recommended to succeed fully in the course and engage with the material on the deepest level.
Class Conduct and Netiquette
Students must practice proper conduct and netiquette. This means communicating in a respectful and appropriate manner when addressing other students and faculty on any portion of the website or through any other electronic means. There is no in-person section to this class, so proper class conduct means respect and respectful netiquette at all times.
