Course Syllabus

At the heart of every course are the assignments that students complete and the feedback they receive. Who works, learns.

Assignments can serve many purposes;

  • explore a topic
  • practice a skill
  • demonstrate understanding

Best practices with assignments are to make them meaningful, well-planned, differentiated, clear, and correctly situated in the larger lesson.

Feedback can serve many purposes;

  • validate the student experience
  • provide corrective instruction
  • describe progress toward understanding

Best practice with feedback is to make it timely, specific, constructive, and kind. It is also important to make sure that students take the time to reflect on feedback and revisit or revise their work based on the feedback.

Your Canvas course can help with both assignments and with feedback.

Canvas assignments have tools to:

  • connect students to instructions and resources
  • provide a multiple modalities for assignment completion
  • help students schedule their work
  • allow assignments to be given to specific students

Canvas feedback tools include:

  • different styles of feedback (rubrics, text, video, ink on document)
  • peer-feedback
  • instant feedback for some assessment items (self-grading quizzes)
  • notifications when feedback is given
  • recording & retaining all feedback given on an assignment
  • re-submission of assignments

The modules in this course are designed to

  • introduce you the different assignment types available in Canvas and what options you have in creating them
  • show you the different options for feedback on assignments submitted through Canvas
  • give examples of quizzes and self-marking quizzes in Canvas
  • introduce you to the Canvas Gradebook and the tools available for communicating with students and sending grades to our SIS

This course will not create good assignments for you, and it won't mark your papers for you, but it will help you feel comfortable in choosing the right tool for your assignment and make managing student submissions easier.
