Course Description:

The purpose of the course is two fold. The first is to promote and expose the student to healthy fitness activities/practices/routines and foster habits that will promote a lifelong interest in fitness development in order to enhance quality of life. The second is to provide the students with knowledge of current driving laws, prepare them with safe driving techniques, and develop sound judgement for situational decision making while driving.

 

Health/Driver Education/Physical Education Objectives:

 

  1. Expose or enhance the students knowledge of stretching techniques, cardiovascular fitness development, and basic muscular strength/endurance principles and techniques.
  2. Provide instruction and understanding of lifetime fitness activities.
  3. Develop and enhance knowledge of: healthful food choices, healthy lifestyles, planning for workouts, as well as knowledge of body systems, functions, and  
  4. Aquire and demonstrate working knowledge of laws, rules, procedures, and techniques for driving a motor vehicle on the highway transportation system (HTS).
  5. Identify and Analyze physical and psychological conditions that affect driver performance.
  6. Apply the working knowledge gained through course content through independent practice of the necessary competencies with a parent, guardian, or responsible adult driver.
  7. Prepare students to meet the VA State licensing requirements and become a responsible driver.

 

Activities:

The following are typical examples of activities that will be utilized during course instruction, however is not an exhaustive list.

  1. Direct teacher instruction/modeling
  2. Independent practice and assignments outside class
  3. Large group instruction/participation
  4. Small group instruction/participation
  5. Virtual instruction 
  6. Class discussions
  7. Projects, assessments, assignments

 

Necessary Materials:

  1. Comfortable school appropriate PE attire-provided by student 
  2. VADETS driver education workbook-provided by FHS
  3. School issued technology device.

 

General Rules/Expectations:

  1. Each student must follow the school specific code of conduct requirements found within the FHS student handbook.
  2. Students must be seated and prepared for instruction prior to the tardy bell sounding.
  3. Students will remain engaged and cooperative during instructional time. 
  4. Students will demonstrate respect for themselves, other students, the teacher, and school staff members.
  5. Students are responsible to prepare and bring appropriate materials to class (workbook or PE attire)
  6. Students are required to complete their own work on assignments/projects. Plagiarism is unacceptable and will incur academic and behavioral consequences.

 

Online Rules/Expectations.

 

1.  Make sure your laptop is charged before class

2.  Check Canvas and log in to Zoom 5 minutes before each class

3.  Sign in to Zoom with your full name

4.  Be dressed and prepared just like you’re coming to the school building

5.  No eating or drinking during class

6.  Use the restroom between classes

7.  Keep your microphone muted unless you are asked to un-mute

8.  Use the chat box to ask questions

9.  Minimize your distractions (especially phones)

10.  Be polite and respectful to your teachers and peers

11.  Take notes and keep up with your assignments

12.  Have good academic integrity

13.  Keep your account information secure

 

Grading Procedures:

 

Student grades will be achieved through classwork assignments/participation, homework, quizzes, tests, and projects. The semester grade (Course Grade) will be determined by the average of each 9 weeks=85% and the Final Exam=15%. Also refer to the school handbook for Exam Exemption policies. 

 

Assignments will be valued according to the following percentages

Homework 10%

Classwork 30%

Quiz 20%

Test 25%

Projects 15%
