Message from the NESTA President:

Greetings potential project participants. I'm thrilled to provide a forum that encourages colleagues to collaborate and safely extend the walls of their classrooms during NESTA's first community data exploration project. As teachers, (pre-service to veteran staff) we understand that an engaging and effective professional development model requires both active participation and reflection. NESTA is a solely volunteer organization of active and retired K-12 educators that value a teacher's professional and personal time. Our data exploration projects aim to stretch the possibilities of your classroom expectations and goals. Join us to learn how to start to shift your classroom's goals to include authentic investigation while being supported by fellow teachers along the way.

During the month of April, NESTA members invite both you (as individual learners) and your classroom to come along on our journey to explore a scientific question about Earth's energy budget. This Spring, we'll keep things simple and ask everyone to make and collect observations about your local cloud coverage. By doing so, you will contribute data that supports the scientific goals of the NASA CERES Project and engage in scientific inquiry that relies on both science practices as well as meaningful cross-cutting concepts.

Join your students and use this project as an opportunity to learn. While engaging in meaningful data collection and observations, your class also has the opportunity to explore some of the complexities of, and impacts from changes to Earth's energy budget. During the project, educators gain experience participating in Globe program activities; accessing My NASA Data lessons as well as gains skills and learn about scaffolding tools to support analysis of NASA data products. Ultimately, educators and their students will be challenged to make connections between Earth's energy budget and the consequences to their daily lives. These connections can be used to foster ideas to develop further scientific investigations and solutions that support the goals of NOAA Planet Stewards.
