The best models have intelligent navigation and a feature to avoid objects that help them maneuver around toys, cords and other household obstacles.
1. Roomba iRobot i3+ from iRobot EVO
The iRobot Roomba i3+ is a great robot vacuum that has many smart features that make it easier to maintain. The automatic bin emptying feature is one of the most impressive features we've seen in a robot vacuum. It works well on carpets as well as hard floors. The app walks you through the entire process. It's also easy to use and set up. Another notable feature is the ability to go back to the spot where it began in our tests. It did this for 77 minutes on one cleaning, before running out of battery.
The i3+ EVO unlike the other robot vacuums we tested has a self emptying bin that automatically disposes of debris in an external dirt compartment on its charging base when it is full. This helps reduce the need for hands-on maintenance and helps keep the i3+ EVO from overfilling, however it still requires manually cleaned after each cleaning session. The i3+ EVO dustbin can hold 2.4L, which is enough to last through four to five cleaning sessions.
Similar to the i7, this model uses state-of-the-art floor tracking sensors to create maps and navigate in neat rows. However the i3+ EVO only stores a single map while the i7 is able to store multiple maps. The i7's map is used to create virtual barriers and no-go zones but not the i3+ EVO.
The i3+ EVO does a better job of removing debris from the surface when compared to other robovacs that we have reviewed, but it is not the most effective in cleaning edges and corners. It is also less gentle on furniture, despite being remarkably silent. It was a bit rough on furniture as it pushed chairs away. It also made some collisions with the sides of the bed.

If you're looking to expand your collection of robot vacuums or just beginning your journey using one, the Q5 Pro is a great choice. It also excels on carpets and gets an excellent score in our navigation tests. The only snag is that it's a little noisier than many other models we test, and it doesn't fare similarly in our user satisfaction and predicted reliability assessments.
The Q5 Pro comes with a large dust bin of 770ml, meaning that you won't need to empty it as often as other 2-in-1 robots. Its 240-minute runtime is also quite generous in comparison to other robots we've tested. If the battery is depleted it returns to its dock and recharges before continuing cleaning where it left off. You can manage the Q5 Pro using the app or voice commands using Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant.
This is the first robot we've seen that incorporates 3D mapping. This, along with other innovations, makes it do exceptionally well during our mopping and vacuuming tests. It allows you to plan cleaning schedules, create no-go zones, and view the battery's status, among other things. The app is easy to use, even though it doesn't support Apple HomeKit; that feature is scheduled to be added by 2025. As of November 1, Apple has updated a footnote on its website to reflect that this feature is delayed until 2025. HomeKit isn't compatible with other robots, however Siri Shortcuts are.
