Evolution Korea
In the past, Korea's scientific community has refrained from engaging with creationists, afraid that doing so might boost the credibility of the group. However, silence is no any longer an option.
The STR has been fighting to remove content from textbooks that explain evolution, including the discovery of the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx as an early bird's ancestor. This is only one aspect of the development paradigm's evolution.
What is Evolution?
The theory of evolution is a scientific one that explains the evolution of the genetic traits of living organisms over time. The theory is based on the fact that living things adapt to their environment which can result in changes in genes or even whole genomes. Over time these changes could result in the emergence of new species. Natural selection is the most popular theory of evolution. It describes how individuals who have advantages are more likely to reproduce and survive than those with disadvantageous ones. This variation in reproduction could eventually lead to the emergence and evolution of new species.
The word "evolution" originates from the Latin for revealing or unrolling has been used in many different ways as the concept has changed in both science and in other fields. Early evolutionists, such as Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles's grandfather) believed that the existing species changed into other species in a planned manner. Etienne Geoffroy St-Hilaire was Lamarck's embryologist student who came up with the term "transmutation" to describe this view. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, criticized the idea of evolution and borrowed the term from Geoffroy’s student.
Evolutionary biologists define it more recently as a process by which living organisms develop traits that increase their chances of surviving or producing offspring. Over time, genetic variability can cause a population acquire new physical characteristics or biological functions. This change in gene frequencies is called natural selection, and is the primary driver behind evolutionary changes. However non-genetic changes like the increase in muscle mass due to diet or exercise cannot be considered to be examples of evolution since they are not inherited by the next generation.
Despite the fact that evolution has withstood the test of time and thousands of scientific tests, creationists have seized on the idea that the theory is controversial and argue that it shouldn't be taught in schools. In South Korea, creationists have gained a few victories in their fight to remove evolution from high school textbooks which includes the removal of any references to the evolutionary history of humans and the Archaeopteryx feathered dinosaur that is thought to be an ancestral bird's ancestor.
Why is Evolution Important for Humanity?
Evolution explains the origins and evolution of Earth and all living species. It also serves as a basis of biology, and aids scientists to comprehend how living organisms operate and develop. Evolution also shows how different species are linked. Scientists study evolution to better comprehend nature and make valuable discoveries, such as the development of new treatments.
The evidence for evolution of biological species is overwhelming. No other scientific theory explains more about the universe and the life on our planet. It has been rigorously studied and verified for many years. Many people, including religious leaders, are in favor of the scientific theory. It is important to note that evolutionary biology does not contradict religions, since the theory is based on things, events and processes in the physical world.
In reality many religious people have discovered ways to reconcile their beliefs with evolutionary theory. Certain Christians for instance, believe that God created everything through evolution, and that humans share an ancestral connection to other animals.
It is important that scientists and educators speak out for teaching evolution. Unfortunately, in a few countries around the world the anti-evolution movement is growing. In

In South Korea, a group known as the Society for Textbook Revise (STR), an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research, is campaigning for the removal of textbooks about the evolution of horses and the bird ancestor Archaeopteryx.
While these are disturbing changes, it's important to remember that the evidence for evolution is overwhelming. The evidence for evolution comes from many sources, such as fossils, genetics and the behavior of living creatures. Other scientists independently verify the evidence.
The majority of scientists support the theory of evolution. The reason for this is a variety of reasons. Certain scientists study evolution in order to discover practical solutions, such as developing treatments, while others are motivated by a desire to improve animal and plant species, typically for the benefit of humans. Some scientists are simply curious, while others have a strong religious belief in God.
What is Creationism?
Creationists are those who believe that God created the universe and everything in it. They also believe that the Bible is the word of God and should be taken as such. Many creationists are Christians, but not all. Creationists generally fall in one of two categories: Young Earth creationists (YEC) and old earth creationists (OEC).
YECs are the most well known form of creationist, and they believe that God created the world exactly as described in the Bible. YECs hold that the biblical account of six days of creation was literal and that the universe and life on Earth were created just recently.
OECs are not as well-known However, they are just as passionate about their beliefs as YECs. OECs believe that the universe and all life on Earth are billions of years old and that evolution is a myth.
Both types of creationism reject the notion that scientific principles like natural selection and abiogenesis are able to explain the origin of life on Earth. They argue that evolution is impossible because it would require an extraordinary event, and that the pioneers of modern science rejected miracles out of fear that they would lose credibility.
Some creationists accept naturalistic evolutionary and special creation and consider their views to be "theistic evolution.” This is sometimes referred to as "continuous creationism" or "evolution from the created species." In this view, God creates the original species and allows them to evolve over time. These evolution changes will eventually result in new species that are similar to the original.
Other creationists hold that God created the universe and all living things in one event, referred to as the Great Flood. Creationists believe that the original species were all created at the same time and that they grew slowly afterwards. They reject the idea of abiogenesis, and argue that self-replicating life can't come from nonliving matter.
In general, creationists are opposed to the teaching of evolution in schools. This is a position that is backed by numerous professional organizations, including the National Science Teachers Association, the Association for Science Teacher Education, the American Anthropological Association, and the Geological Society of America. However, certain academic institutions and scientists are more flexible, and permit the inclusion of both evolution and creationism in their curricula.
What is Creationism?
When people think of creationism most often, they think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolution group. The publishers of high-school textbooks recently announced that they would remove references to evolution from their books. The Society for Textbook Revise, an independent organization that is an offshoot from the Korea Association for Creation Research (KACCR), has led this effort. The STR has won its first victory by removing from textbooks examples of the evolution and ancestor of the avian, called the Archeopteryx. The focus is now on removing snippets of Darwin's notorious finch research as well as on human evolution, too.
STR claims to have the support of around 4,000 families and individuals. Its goal, it says, is to rid the world of what it calls "atheist materialism" which paints a negative view for students. It also seeks to counter the influence of American Creationists in the United States. A survey of students in biology revealed that a majority of them did not believe evolution. The causes are not evident, but they could be due to religious beliefs or the absence of creation scientists in the country.
The KACR accomplished a number of things through its seminars and lectures in the past. It also publishes a bimonthly magazine called Creation and the book. One of them was a textbook on natural science that had a creationist perspective. It sparked interest in the college community. In 1991, a professor along with a minister began teaching Creation Science at one university. It is still taught in the present.
On August 6 and 7, 1993, KACR hosted a second International Symposium on Creation Research. The event was held in conjunction with the opening of the World Expo in Daejeon. Six foreign lecturers including ICR's John Morris and Steven Austin presented to an audience of several thousand. KACR and its members have been delivering lectures on creation science in major seminaries, too. KACR plans to establish a Creation Science Education Center in the future.
