The theory of evolution is based on the idea that certain traits are passed down more frequently than other traits. These characteristics make it easier to survive and reproduce for individuals, and their number tends to increase over time.

Furthermore, most forms of natural selection reduce genetic variation within populations. Natural selection is not likely to create new traits without the involvement of other forces.

Mutation, drift genetics and migration are three major evolutionary forces that alter the frequency of genes. These processes are accelerated due to sexual reproduction, and the fact that each parent passes on half of its genes to each offspring. These genes are called alleles and can have different frequencies in different individuals belonging to the same species. The allele frequencies that result determine whether the trait will be dominant or recessive.

Macroevolution takes a long period to complete and is only visible in fossil records. Microevolution, on the other hand, is a much faster process that can be observed in living organisms today. Microevolution is driven by genetic mutation and selection which operate on a smaller scale than macroevolution, and can be increased by other mechanisms such as gene flow or horizontal gene transfer.

The process of evolution is based on chance

The idea that evolution occurs through chance is a claim that has been used for a long time by anti-evolutionists. This argument is not true and it's crucial to understand the reasons. The argument confuses randomness with contingency. This error is a result of a misreading of the nature of biological contingency as explained by Stephen Jay Gould.
