We also check the way it manages to avoid obstacles, including power cords, furniture legs, and pet waste.
The most advanced robots can identify different floors and identify landmarks, like windows and doors. The most advanced models, like the Roborock S8 Pro Ultra, feature a dual-sensor navigation system which uses a LIDAR sensor to map the room, and a lighting camera in front of the bot to detect objects in real-time. This allows the S8 to stay clear of common obstacles like power cords and furniture legs and can store up to four floor maps within its internal memory.
Cheaper models don't come with this type of object detection and rely on bump sensors, which aren't as accurate. In my testing, they plowed right through cords, dog poop, and even shoes that were placed in the middle of the room. The most cost-effective choice, the Dreametech D10+, is an exception to this. It has excellent carpet, hard floor, tangle and hair pickup. It also has a near-perfect auto empty score.
Another important feature is a large dust bin that doesn't need to be manually emptied, and for models that mop, a water tank which can store weeks of mopping sessions. The Karcher RCV 5 comes with this feature and has a large enough footprint that it can be placed under furniture, but not so large that it won't fit in the space between your toilet and bathtub.
Apps
Robot vacuums are a lot like upright vacuums and require an enormous amount of technology to get them up to speed. There are plenty of choices available in a market that is a mature. But even the top models still require some interaction with their users - particularly when cleaning schedules are being planned as well as establishing a home floor plan and establishing virtual barriers.
Think about a model that has its own app that can identify the layout of your home and save the settings for future use. This will allow the robot vacuum to continue where it left off in subsequent runs, rather than having the mapping process restarted every time.
